'The content they have studied and discussed has been brilliant, using knowledge they already had from the school curriculum to place their new ideas and knowledge clearly, and adding some much needed breadth and depth.'

Happy New Year from The Sankofa London Schools Project (SLSP)!
As you may already know, the SLSP is a local Black history project which has been working in collaboration with secondary schools across London to teach Black British history in an engaging, creative and curriculum-relevant way. Leading on from our successes with Key Stage 3-5 students over the last four years, we are now looking to bring our work into Primary Schools.
Our project explores the life stories of people of African descent who lived and worked in London hundreds of years ago. We focus on individuals who reflect and represent London’s long established Black community - role models, whose stories enable students to form a positive connection to the past and whose achievements reflect a community with agency and ambition, made up of individuals across all walks of life. People like Toby Eccho Chelsea Gardener, James Cumberlidge Royal Trumpeter, Olaudah Equiano Arctic Explorer, Jean Baptiste Gilbert Stylist to the Stars and Phillis Wheatly the Poet.
What does the project look like in practice? It helps students develop a balanced understanding of the past, while supporting priorities around diversity, belonging and aspiration. This is achieved through discussion-led classroom-based workshops in which students discover the life story of an individual through interactive resources designed for primary-age learners, respond to the story creatively with the guidance and support of a professional local artist and work together to produce a final classroom artwork, ideal for display and celebration. This approach ensures learning is memorable, inclusive and accessible to all abilities.
What are the benefits?
Students receive high-quality, inclusive history provision
Engaged learners who see themselves reflected in the past
A creative collaboration with a visible and durable outcome
Support for equality, diversity and belonging initiatives
A meaningful way to strengthen local history teaching
Please get in touch if you are interested in hosting us in your classroom, we are adaptable and can tailor the project to suit the specific needs of the school and students. Look forward to hearing from you!
All the best for 2026
