Only around 2% of births in the UK happen at home.
Yet for women with low-risk pregnancies, planned home birth is considered a safe option and research has shown it can be associated with lower intervention rates.
So why do so few women choose it?
Part of it may be that most of us grow up seeing birth portrayed as an emergency.
TV shows.
Films.
Dramatic storylines.
We're often taught that birth is something that happens to us rather than something our bodies are designed to do.
Of course, home birth isn't the right choice for everyone. Some women feel safest in hospital. Some women need medical support. Some women simply prefer it.
But I do think every woman deserves to know all of her options and understand the evidence behind them.
What are your thoughts?

My first baby was born by emergency section after a failed epidural and a cascade of unnecessary intervention. So during my second pregnancy, I was determined this birth would feel different.
I listened to Birth Box every day. I wrote affirmations on my bedroom wall:
“My body was built for this.”
“I can do anything for 60 seconds.”
“It’s my body, my baby, my choice.”
When labour started, I stayed home listening to the Oxytocin Bubble tracks on repeat. I didn’t want the tens machine or birth comb. I just wanted to be left alone in my bedroom with your calming voice guiding me through.
When my waters broke, the pressure became intense and the surges brought me to my knees in the shower. I remember looking at my slightly panicked partner and saying:
“She’s actually coming.”
Almost an hour later I arrived at hospital. The midwife asked me for a urine sample and I just looked at her and said:
“No way, I need to push!”
A few steps later, my beautiful baby girl was born ❤️
My daughter’s birth has changed me as a woman. It’s brought me back to myself and healed a part of me I was missing.
