On the International Day for Biological Diversity, we remind ourselves of the vital importance of biodiversity for life on Earth. In 2026, under the theme set by the United Nations “Acting locally for global impact,” we are encouraged to take small local actions that collectively create a meaningful global difference in protecting nature and sustaining life.

In January 2026, an international team of scientists announced the discovery of a potentially habitable planet in the Milky Way, approximately 150 light-years away, called HD 137010 b.
It is a cold, rocky planet, slightly larger than Earth, that orbits a Sun-like star.
Like Earth, it is thought to lie within the star's "habitable zone," the region around a star where a planet's surface temperature allows for liquid water, a vital element for life. The team estimates its orbital period to be about one year, similar to Earth's, with the planet receiving less than a third of the heat and light from its star compared to what Earth receives from the Sun.
