Interestingly, the study suggests that natural disaster sites can evoke positive, transformative experiences rather than just morbid fascination with death. Safe encounters, diverse emotional stimuli, and meaningful reflections foster positive emotions in dark tourism. The research provides new insights into the profound impact of visiting such sites, beyond the traditional focus on death and mourning.

Last week in our TMRC research seminar series we had two fascinating and engaging presentations.
Dr Chen Yang talked about the identity construction on social media by Chinese and 2nd generation Chinese influencers, in her wonderfully titled presentation "How to eat dumplings correctly: seeking attention and constructing identity online."
Following, Dr Isabella Ye explored perceptions of airport borders by international travellers into the UK in her talk titled "Travel mobility injustice at the airport border: an assemblage lens".
We had lively discussions and shared experiences with both presenters.

Recently TMRC and CTaGJ hosted a joint ghoulish research seminar on the theme of Dark Tourism and Hauntology. The interdisciplinary inter-institution event welcomed back James Kennell (University of Surrey) and Jelena Farkic (Breda University of Applied Sciences), who hosted and presented respectively.
Presenters from across various London institutions and beyond covered topics such as dark tourism and edutainment; Spectres of Crime and Jack the Ripper; ghost criminology, parapolitics, and grand conspiracies within the fossil fuel industry; absence and spectrality at exclusion zones like Chernobyl; and literary historical geography in the city of London to analyse space, economics and ghosts.
