"Jūs mane kankinate, kai naudojate neteisingus laikus",-- sako man prancūzų mokytoja. Kita vertus, o ką -- argi mes pianistai bemokydami ausų nenusibrūžiname? Būna taip, kad prabraukia per ausis lyg su tarka!

Arthur SHATTUCK plays BACH 16/05/2021

The Piano Files with Mark Ainley shared a few private recordings of Arthur Shattuck, made in New York ca. 1940.

Shattuck was an American pianist who went to Vienna to train with Leschetizky when he was only 13 years old and lived in Paris for some time. He died in 1951 after having been inactive for a couple of decades due to ill health, and officially made no disc recordings, only piano rolls.

These precious 16 minutes or so of Bach playing reveal the pianistic hallmarks we hear in the best of the pianists who studied with Leschetizky: gorgeous tonal colours, fluid phrasing, clarity of texture, and attentive voicing. Shattuck's legato and transparency are absolutely marvellous - notice how his attack lets a note sing for just the right amount of time before the next one, without ever a hint of hardness as he strikes the key (the Siciliano is a perfect example).

Truly mesmerizing Bach playing from a forgotten figure who was clearly a wonderful pianist.
