Yesterday we had our ‘For the Love of Poetry’ workshop and they came up with a beautifully scary poem:
‘The Witch Hour’ by Jodie, Kalen, Olivia, Sophie and Taïni.
Her face is green
And she feasts on bats
She wears a tall black hat
And she has a ginger cat
She rode her broom at the full moon
She likes to whistle a nice tune
Gaining speed as she glides through the air
She goes round the houses,
Steeling children’s sweets.
Her laugh is like nails on a chalk board.
So beware children of the witch hour,
And stay underneath your sheets!

“Cauldrons are one of the most potent symbols of witchcraft. They were used historically for many different purposes, including preparing potions. This particular example was found in the River Thames at Battersea in 1861, and had perhaps been deposited as an offering to the gods. It is almost 3000 years old and was created by riveting together seven plates of sheet bronze.“

How did Halloween start?
The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain honoured the dead and welcomed winter. It was a luminal time when the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead could be crossed.
Yes, I think a poem is a spell of kinds
that keeps things living in a written line,
whatever’s lost or leaving - lock of rhyme - and so I write and write and write your name.
