Have you ever used Duolingo to learn a language? Headspace for a guided meditation? For those from the UK, do you ever reminisce on the days of coolmathsgames?

Digital interventions in learning are everywhere and there's no doubt about their efficacy. One thing that is still to be understood, however, is how these tools can be used for community engagement.

Context Culture has now entered the research field, driven by our co-founder from as a digital intervention for archiving immigrant families' stories, with the intention of preserving their cultural heritage. It will also have outward looking implications whereby students can use these stories to better understand their own cultures and to support these families integrations into the local communities.

Yuchen and co-presented a research brief to the last week, where Yuchen spoke in person whilst Stewart tuned in from the UK!

Storytelling as a tool for reflection in the context of intercultural communication is the way forward!

What a year!

We’ve had the best time recording this podcast with so many amazing guests and are so thankful for all the knowledge and insight they’ve given us! Every episode has been a learning opportunity and we’re so excited to continue this into season 2.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, check out our final episode of season 1 where we wrap up with our key takeaways and an insight into what we’ve got planned for season 2!

In this episode, you’ll hear reflections on:
• The power of storytelling
• Our favourite episodes
• Whether we think we have any biases
• Whether there is such thing as cultural superiority/inferiority, and much more!

And if that’s not enough, we’ve also released the introductory episode for season 2 to get you excited for what's to come! We’ve changed up the format entirely and hope you're as keen as we are to get going! Thank you all for the support you’ve given us over the past year and we look forward to supporting your cross-cultural learning in 2022!

As always, the link is in our bio and on our story, or simply search “Context Culture Cast” into wherever you get your podcasts.

Welcome to the penultimate episode of season 1 of the Culture Cast! In this very special episode, hosts Yuchen Liu and Stewart Thomas John Knights sit down with Xuan, who opens up about the Opera in China.

In this episode we talk about national differences between operas, moving on to regional differences and explore how these iterations of a main story change the story for the better or for the worse. Xuan also helps us move onto pop-culture, giving us some C-pop songs to listen to!

Welcome back to the Culture Cast! This week, hosts Yuchen Liu and Stewart Thomas John Knights interview Harrison Wheeler, a UI/UX designer/senior design manager at a "pretty large tech firm" who has done everything from playing football (the American kind) in Iowa to crafting elegant user-experience journeys in Silicon Valley!

In this episode, Harrison takes us on a journey of his own - giving us an insight into what culture means to him, what his word of 2020 was and how conscious designing has played such an important role in the development of his career. We also touch upon the cultural variations of seating arrangements as a bridge to discuss Harrisons alumni talk on 'Working your way to the table'. This is a brilliant episode with an extremely accomplished guest and we hope you enjoy.

Welcome back to the Culture Cast! This week, we're jumping back into our conversation with Djamil to hear about his international experience with the cause .

Across the globe, the increasing volume of the voices raising awareness for the experience of women is a wonderful collection of sounds to hear. However, this doesn't mean that we're there yet - as all voices should be involved. Injustice based on s*x, gender identity and race continues and, during the pandemic, has increased in some places, and Djamil talks about his experiences learning about the injustice that occurs in his own back yard.

📅 Welcome back to this weeks episode of the Culture Cast, and have we got an interesting one for you this time around! In our discussions with third culture kids, expats and International students, we've spoken both culture and the effects being abroad can have on shaping our cultural outlook, but what about our language?

🇬🇧 🇨🇳 This week, Ying Siu takes us through her research and her process of answering the question: English or Chinese? Both or neither? This investigation into heritage language loss in British-Born Chinese and its impact on self-identity uncovers some very interesting perspectives that take root in culture, language and societal structure!

3️⃣ Our recording session with C**t and Joe was just so good that we HAD to release a third part!

📜Throughout the past 2 parts, we've spoken about how complicated identity can be, how common interests like sports can act as "passports" to getting to know others around the world and how sometimes our view of history is jaded by the information we've been given (or haven't been given) in school.

🚀 In this episode, we bring all of this together to ask the key question, "how do we adapt?". This question has confused cross-cultural researchers for years and we hope to provide a bit of clarity around some of the ways you might go about succeeding in this difficult task!

⏰ As a quick reminder, C**t and Joe are two martial arts specialists who have travelled across the world to practice their craft.

We just hit 7️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ listeners on the Culture Cast!

🎙 To all those that have tuned in just once, found us through other people or listen every week - we really appreciate you supporting us.

🔥 We also want to extend a huge thank you to our brilliant team, wonderfully engaging guests and all those that have given us advice that has helped us build the podcast!

⚙️🛠 We love making these episodes and it means so much to us to see that people are enjoying them and finding them useful.

🌍 Culture has always been important and we’re so glad to see that more people are realising this. But there’s still more work to do. Between making more episodes and launching our app - we feel truly honoured to being part of the drive towards global cultural understanding.

📯So thank you, we can’t wait to see you again this week! And if you haven’t listened to our most recent episode (or any of our episodes) you can find them all here:
