💡 Did you know?
✨ The name "Epping" is believed to come from the Old English term "Ep-ingas," which means "the people of Eppa," possibly referring to a local chieftain.
✨ The station building underwent renovations in recent years to enhance its facilities and improve accessibility for passengers.
✨ It is the eastern terminus of the Central Line and serves as a gateway to the picturesque Epping Forest, offering opportunities for outdoor activities and nature exploration.
✨ along with Amersham, Chesham, Chalfont & Latimer and Chorleywood are the only stations that lie outside the M25 motorway.
✨ A major contributing factor to Epping station's popularity, is that many people from nearby towns like Harlow, Bishop's Stortford, and Chelmsford use the station to commute to London; because it’s cheaper to travel to the city by London Underground than use their own National Rail stations. 😉
✨ It has the largest car park on the London Underground system, with 538 parking bays.
✨ At the bottom of the car park there is a well-looked-after museum. At the end of the station’s car parking, there is Epping Museum. A unique London Transport signal cabin (including the 90+ former Locomotive ) is the only cabin on the entire Underground network in the preservation and open to the public. The museum is looked after entirely by volunteers and is open to the public.
🏘 According to HM Land Registry (24 May 2023), the average house price (over the last year) around the Loughton station area was £572,354. However, if you consider renting, the price range is between a £2,500 pcm (for a four-bedroom semidetached house with two bathrooms) and £1,100pcm (one-bedroom flat).

🏤 87/272 THEYDON BOIS UNDERGROUND STATION
📍 Location: Theydon Bois, Essex (district of Epping Forest)
🚇 Zone fare: 6
🚉 Served by the Central Line since September 1949
🏤 Opened: April 1865 by Great Eastern Railway and provided “milk trains” to Liverpool Street.

📌 Nearby: Epping Forest, Loughton Camp (an Iron Age earth fort dating 500BC in Epping Forest), Epping Forest, Theydon Bois Green, Theydon Bois Golf Club
💡 Did you know?
✨ The station’s name was originally Theydon and changed to Theydon Bois in 1865. Some research says the name "Theydon Bois" derived from the Old English term "bois" meaning "the wood" which refers to the nearby Epping Forest; others say it comes from the Bois family who held the manor in the 12th and 13th centuries; Despite the French-looking word, it is pronounced ‘Boys’ according to its locals.
✨ Theydon Bois station is the only London Underground station with a thatched roof. The unique roof design adds to the station's charm and character. Even though my photos were taken during the late afternoon, the roof is still visible in the 1935 shots.
✨ A few notable characteristics of Theydon Bois village are the complete absence of street lighting (villagers voted for this to maintain a traditional ambience), a landmark - the ‘Avenue of Trees’ on Loughton Lane (a line of oak trees planted in the 1830s to celebrate Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne) and an annual Donkey Derby event (usually in July).
✨ Theydon Bois is known for its picturesque village setting and is a popular residential area with a mix of traditional and modern homes, shops and pubs (to mention just a couple of The Bull a 17th-century building and The Queen Victoria).
🏘 According to HM Land Registry (24 May 2023), the average house price (over the last year) around the Loughton station area was £797, 067. However, if you consider renting, the price range is between £8,500 pcm (for a six-bedroom detached house with five bathrooms) and £1,850 pcm (a two-bedroom with two bathrooms apartment).
