Barriers to Equanimity: The Discriminatory Mind
The 4 judgement domains mentioned in this video - The 'innate', 'social', 'interactive' and 'reflective' form the psychometric scale I developed for my PhD.
The research with the 'Equanimity Barriers Scale' showed that those who scored higher on this scale also scored highly with generalised anxiety and depression. Wheres those who scored lower on the scale reported better general mental wellbeing.
As far as I am aware the EBS is being translated and tested in Brazil π§π· and Turkey πΉπ· as we speak.
My book, which is a manual to help you cultivate equanimity [my research in simplified form] is coming out in Dutch π³π± this year.
The message is - work on your judgements and you improve your mental health capabilities.

It takes time and effort to post on social media or review on amazon and so I deeply appreciate this post by Tegan Reeves PhD ERYT . Feedbacks hard to come by, so when it happens, it's like a bolt of lightening to keep nudging the boulder up the mountain. So far, this books been very lucky to have passionate advocates to aid organic growth. With no marketing strategy and lazy social media consistency, I rely on the humble word of mouth! Please keep those mouths moving!

There's nothing better than the look, feel and smell of a new book.
π₯ They also taste good. I regularly tear out pages of the offprints and dip them in my coffee.
π§ They also sound good if you use them as a fan, the waft sensation also cools you down after you've read some insight and have become temporarily discombobulated π€―π§
So...paperback books are an absolute feast for the senses and this little book is a banquet. There's no moment like the present (pun intended) so order today.

Figure 6.3: Equanimity responds to judgements. The figure represents a person mentally protected (by the umbrella), with an open heart of compassion.
Manifesting inner equanimity is hard, as it involves being very mindful. Being mindful of thoughts and events as transient, fleeting experiences rather than as a fixed and rigid reality enables us to see the bigger picture. This enables us to lessen our identification with the thought or experience as being intrinsically good or bad and to just observe the changing nature of whatever is presenting itself. All three of those internal experiences are transitory. For example, I can see that a thought has arisen and that my mind has given it a label of good, bad or indifferent because of my unique sponge-like mind.
However, the thought is not me but a transient moment in time and not a fixed reality. Therefore, with self-compassion, I can let go of this thought without becoming over-identified with it. I am draining the thought or feeling of any potential to overly influence me. Thus, I remain in a light-hearted equanimous mood regardless of whatever thought or feeling comes next. Rather than replay the scary beach scene over and over and give it a certain power to cause me anxiety, or go overboard with the conversation I had with my friend and now think I am a perfect person, I can embrace them as subjective experiences and be kind towards myself with them. I might think to myself, βPoor me for experiencing the fear, but it was just a one off and I wonβt worry about future times swimming,β and βItβs nice to hear positive things for a change from my friends,β for example. Then I let the thoughts go so I can remain present in the moment.
How likely are you to βplay outβ the narrative in your head based on the projections of good/bad, right/wrong, wholesome/unwholesome? How likely does a thought or feeling lead to an emotive action or behaviour based on a strongly-held perception by your own discriminatory mind? Can you think of times in which you have reacted and then later regretted it? Instead of reacting with judgement, allow your inner equanimity to respond.
