Trying to learn new words? The brain loves context!

Research suggests learning words in context can help support stronger learning.

Our brains like context, imagery and experiences. It helps us store new information more easily!

Have a go at learning new words in a sentence 🖊️📜
Use pictures instead of translating from word to word 🌳🫟
Tell a short story or recall your experiences 🧠👣🗣️

Have you found this helps you to recall new words?

Feeling frustrated learning prepositional verbs?  😵

Many of my students have the same issue, and I've worked with them to figure out an effective solution to learning and remembering when and where to use the correct prepositional verb! 🙃

Watch the video to learn the exact same method my students follow to solve the problem learning those pesky prepositional verbs. 🎯 🤗

What have you tried to learn prepositional verbs and how has it worked for you?

Do you find it hard to make small talk in English in social situations? Or lack confidence to speak out in meetings when you have something to say?

And instead you stay quiet because you're afraid of making mistakes in English? 🤐

You are not alone... I have been there! I discuss this in the video.

How can l learn more vocabulary more quickly?

One of my students asked me this question the other day. It's something I've spoken about before, and it might seem simple but it's a really good question.

I wanted to share my answer with you here in case you have the same question.

I want to talk about 'passing vocabulary'. Instead of learning vocabulary in a book - these are the new words or phrases we come across as we go through our day, new words that come up in conversations, or on television, or words that we see written down as we go about life. They are unexpected... and exciting!

'Passing vocabulary' gives us a fantastic opportunities to expand the words we know and can use. I want you to use three rules to use passing vocabulary to learn MORE words in English.

Rule1: Choose one day a week where you ONLY look for passing vocabulary...

- it sounds simple, but telling ourselves to actively listen or look out for new words and not let unknown words slip by for one whole day is a challenge. However, you will discover so many new, diverse words and it will help your brain tune into unknow words rather than avoid them and watch them pass by!

Rule 2: Take your vocabulary book EVERYWHERE!

- Wherever you are you need to write down any new words you hear immediately or shortly after! This will help you remember where you heard the word and in what kind of context, which helps you remember the word in the long-term.

Rule 3: Choose 3 words to focus on.

- Once you have recorded your passing vocabulary, you need to USE it. On one day of the week, only choose 3 of those new words or phrases and try to use them at any opportunity that day.
Then do the same again the next day with another 3 words.

Does that make sense to you?

Firstly, please don't worry. You are absolutely not alone!

I have been there! 🤚When I was living in Germany learning German, there were so many times where I would sit with a group of people at work or over dinner and I wanted to join in when I felt I had something to say, but my fear of being judged for my non-perfect German was so big that I would say nothing and watch as the conversation continued. I would judge myself for it and I would also feel embarrassed when friends and colleagues would ask why I was so quiet... Which made the whole thing feel worse!

However, little by little, bit by bit, I started to challenge myself and accept that there is no such thing as perfect. Especially with learning languages. I started to join in with conversations a little more and accept that if I needed to speak slower than other people, or repeat what I said sometimes, that was OKAY!

In fact, everybody around me was so supportive, understood I was learning, and were so patient with me 🤗

In a matter of weeks, my fear decreased, my confidence grew and my German improved dramatically! 😁

You can do it too!

If you're afraid of making mistakes whilst speaking - speak more, accept mistakes and soon you'll realise that mistakes don't matter. Your progress will be so much more empowering! 🙌

I noticed some of you having trouble expressing the idea that you remember some information about what a person is telling you, but you're not quite sure.

If this is you, you can use the idiom: "It rings a bell!"

For example:

Friend 1: "Do you remember me talking about my colleague, Peter?"

Friend 2: "Yes! The name rings a bell!"

Let me know in the comments below:
When else can you use this idiom?

Hi everyone! Dan here 👋

I just wanted to introduce myself again to any newcomers to my page and welcome you to my community on Instagram and Facebook! Thanks for joining me! 😁

I've been teaching English for almost five years - in China, the UK and online. I'm a passionate language-learner myself. I learnt French and German during my studies in the UK and now I continue to try and improve my Mandarin Chinese 💪💪

Learning languages is a wonderful way we can connect as humans whilst in the classroom and during our studies; but also, with a small amount of mastery, our ability to bridge perceived divides is enormous. That's why I'm so passionate about teaching English.

I'm thrilled to meet you here and have you in my community.

"Make English impossible to avoid"

My friend mentioned he enjoyed this phrase. I think it's useful.

It would be perfect or ideal if we could live in an English-speaking country to think about and practise English daily. However, living in an English-speaking country is not possible for every English learner.

What is possible 🤔?

Create an environment that makes it EASY to see, read, hear and speak English.

Simple ideas to start with:

🔥Bookmark radio stations and podcasts on your computer to listen to whilst you work or cook (or whenever suits you!)

🔥Change your phone language to English.

🔥Use post-it notes. Write new vocabulary on them. Stick them EVERYWHERE. At work, at home, in the kitchen, in the bathroom!

🔥Subscribe to English language YouTube channels and turn on alerts and notifications.

There are so many ways to make English impossible to avoid.

- What do you do? Let's share our ideas in the comments!

If you find this post useful, please share with a friend who's learning English!

Follow these 3 tips to help simplify your learning journey.

~

Learning a new language, or improving your level, can feel like a high mountain to climb.

This is where we can decide to simplify the process.

~

Try this -

CHOOSE AN AREA you want to improve or need to work on. Be specific. Maybe you want to expand your vocabulary, improve pronunciation or develop your email writing skills.

BREAK IT DOWN into small chunks, mini projects. Focus on one part of the area.

BE CONSISTENT but give yourself small, realistic goals. We always want to learn as much as possible as fast as possible. But sometimes this stops us from starting learning and prevents us from making any progress at all. So take just a little action, and do it very often.

Choose something specific to work on this week and learn a little, often! 💪🧠✨

Pronunciation practise!

There are many ways we can practise our pronunciation to improve speaking clarity, but this is surely a fun favourite of mine...
