Europe has a choice to make about the future of air travel.

Safe Landing recently submitted our response to the European Commission’s consultation on a new EU Aviation Strategy.

At a time when aviation emissions continue to rise and governments across Europe are debating airport expansion, we believe this strategy represents an opportunity to chart a different course: one that pioneers new technologies, strengthens Europe’s industrial base, generates jobs and puts aviation on a genuine flightpath towards environmental sustainability.

Our core message: Europe can be a global leader of clean aviation.

As aviation workers, we know the industry is capable of extraordinary innovation. But innovation does not happen by accident. It requires clear goals, well-designed policy, and a willingness to move beyond business-as-usual. Innovative policy will lead to innovative technology.

📰 *Safe Landing in Aerospace Global News*

George Hibberd, former airline pilot and Safe Landing co-founder, had an opinion piece on the Safe Landing Visioning Assembly published in the online aviation news outlet Aerospace Global News yesterday.

👉 Article link in our bio.

The opinion piece explains the rationale behind our work in Safe Landing around informing and empowering aviation workers through Workers Assemblies. It goes on to to summarise the positive, worker-led vision that co-created by the 26 aviation workers who participated in the Visioning Assembly.

We invite you to join our first Listening Circle hosted by Safe Landing.

We are all feeling the anxiety of the challenges both our industry faces and we are personally confronted with as we navigate these times so this is for anybody in our community. Whether you’re conciously aware of that anxiety or not, feeling numb is also very welcome and perfectly valid.

Community Event: Safe Landing Listening Circle
📅 Wed 25th Feb 2026
🕖 19:00 – 20:30 UTC (UK time)

Safe Landing members Dan & Todd (both former airline pilots and part of our core crew) have both received training from the Climate Psychology Alliance to be co-facilitators and co-participants of a listening circle.

What is a listening circle? ⭕️

A listening circle is a simple, hospitable, empathetic space where fears and uncertainties about our climate and ecological crisis can be safely expressed. Find out more about them by watching a video Dan & Todd recorded on our SL YouTube channel.

Why attend a listening circle, what’s the point?

We often spend a lot of our time ‘doing’ things: for example, trying to kindly nudge the aviation industry on to a more sustainable path. This is undoubtedly important, but what if listening is also an act of ‘doing’? Can slowing down and being with our feelings also give us a sense of agency and could it also benefit the work we find ourselves participating in externally? The best way to answer that is probably to come and try one for yourself.

This may be a daunting proposition, given we live in a world where feelings are not often encouraged or even valued, but we promise to welcome everybody equally, and guide you through the process – which we hope will give all participants a shared outlet for their feelings, and a strengthened sense of community.

Register to attend

Sign-up for our first Safe Landing ‘Listening Circle’, taking place on 25th February from 19:00-20:30pm UTC (UK time), sign up (link in Bio) safe-landing.org/listening-circle-feb2026/

Former airline pilot and Safe Landing community member George Hibberd shared a stage at the Guardian HQ today with the Environment Editor Damian Carrington, Director Orban Wallace and fellow former airline pilot Todd Smith for the screening of the film 'Guilt Trip'.

The film follows George and other aviation workers during their emotional conflict working in aviation and feeling the grief of the industry's impact on the climate and nature crisis.

It's being officially released on the Guardian platforms on 8th July. Watch this space!

Big thanks to .studio for the work put into Guilt Trip since 2021 when the project was conceived.

✈️ It was a pleasure to give a guest lecture on the challenges and opportunities of "Sustainable Aviation" to aerospace and engineering students at the The University of Sheffield today.

🙋🙋‍♂️ There was a great discussion with a room full of ambitious young engineers motivated to take on these challenges in their future careers!

🎅 It was a great way to finish-off the year!

🙏 Thanks to Aerospace Engineering Society - University of Sheffield, and Engineers Without Borders Sheffield for the invite.

🎓 We regularly give talks to groups of college or university students and receive requests from lecturers looking to incorporate guest presentations on sustainability into their courses. Or alternatively, as today, we receive requests directly from students.

💡 We're keen to foster debate and talk to anybody interested in our perspectives and positions - so please get in touch if you'd like to arrange this with us in 2025!

French Pilots Go On Strike!

Last Thursday, pilots in France went on strike to oppose the French government’s plans to triple taxes on plane tickets.

But is it in French pilots’ best interests to be striking against increased aviation taxes?
