The sixth form personal statement is a staple in the application process for academically selective schools and can be the deciding factor in securing a place. It allows schools to get a snapshot of you and gauge how well-prepared you are to write anything of that sort in a year's time when applying for undergraduate programmes. In fact, it is often considered a dress rehearsal for UCAS personal statement writing and should be treated just as seriously. However, there is nothing to worry about, so long as you have the right approach!

It has been reported that Queen Elizabeth II often looked back on her home-schooling with regret, of not gaining a broader knowledge. Her studies included that of constitutional history and French with private tutors and a number of governesses.
However, as a young girl the Queen's studies were fairly limited. She and her sister, Margaret, were the last members of the royal family to have been educated at home.
Her Majesty modernised the way in which royals received their education, with many going on to pursue a more formal education at some of the finest UK private schools. This has further consolidated the reputation of the UK private education sector as world-leading, associated with academic excellence and time-tested traditions. It is no wonder that families based overseas vie to place their children in schools with British royalty in attendance.
Always a proponent of impartiality, the Queen paved the way to revolutionising the role of education to the Crown. Her son, Prince Charles, received a prestigious education at Trinity College and became the first heir, now monarch, to earn a university degree.

Which subjects should I study in sixth form for university entry?
Traditionally, Oxbridge and other top British universities have preferred applicants to have studied βhardβ subjects, such as sciences, maths, English literature, history, geography or classic or modern foreign languages, over newer ones such as business, media studies or photography.
However times have changing and Russell Group universities no longer require students to stick to a rigid list of A Level subjects, so subjects like Accounting, Dance, Drama, Performing Arts, Photography, Sociology, Sports Sciences and Travel and Tourism are equally important if they support the subject the student aims to study at university.
Some career paths, like medicine, still require traditional subjects like Sciences and Maths, although a fourth A Level can generally be any of the studentβs choice.

Whether youβre taking university exams, GCSEs or A Levels, here are some doβs and donβts for exam day:
Do:
β
Get enough sleep the night before the exam
β
Read the questions carefully
β
Regulate your breathing to keep yourself calm
β
Focus on yourself
β
Start with a question you know the answer to well, to build your confidence
β
Plan your answers to long-form questions
β
Ration your time per question
β
Return to any questions you skipped to give them another shot
β
Leave time to check your answers through at the end (make sure you havenβt missed any pages/questions!)
β
Move on after the exam - youβve done your best and you canβt change the past, so onto the next exam
Donβt:
β Over-caffeinate the night before the exam
β Over-cram before the exam
β Get distracted by what others are doing in the exam hall
β Spend too long on one question at expense of other more heavily-weighted questions
β Dwell on the exam once itβs over
