I’m looking forward to seeing you at Guitar Club today at 5pm UK. It’s a free, friendly, low-pressure space to practise, share a tune and enjoy making music together. All levels are welcome : whether you’re just starting out or have been playing for years.

September is almost here, and it always feels like a fresh start.

New term. New habits. New strings. 🎸

If your guitar has been waiting patiently in the corner: or you’ve been thinking about picking one up: this is your gentle nudge from me: start small, pick it up, and play.

You don’t need to be ready. You don’t need a perfect practice routine. Just bring your guitar and join us.

The free Guitar Club is a friendly, low-pressure space to play, learn, practise and connect with other guitarists. Beginners and intermediate players are welcome.

Want smoother, more fluid guitar playing? Try this legato drill today. 🎸

1. On each string, play frets 1–2–3–4 using hammer-ons. Pick the first note only.
2. Descend 4–3–2–1 using pull-offs. Pick the first note, then let each finger release the string cleanly.
3. Move through all six strings at a steady tempo. Start slowly at 60 bpm and aim for even volume.

Keep your fingers close to the fretboard. Use fingertip strength, not tension. Stay relaxed and listen for every note to ring clearly.

It’s still under construction, so this is an early test version. GrooveGalaxy turns guitar learning into missions across different planets, covering five areas: Technique, Rhythm, Chord, Riff and Song.

As you complete missions, you’ll progress through the ranks:
🎸 Groove Cadet → Pilot → Commander

You can explore it at any level. Try the missions, see how the journey feels, and tell me what works, what’s confusing and what could be improved. Your feedback will help me build GrooveGalaxy into a better learning experience for guitarists.

The man who made the guitar dance. 🎸✨

This week's Record of the Week is Django Reinhardt : and for this one we're diving into Djangology, the timeless recordings that capture the fire of gypsy jazz.

Django didn't just play the guitar; he turned it into a singing, swinging voice all of his own. Alongside the great Stéphane Grappelli, he gave us a sound that still feels impossibly fresh: that driving la pompe rhythm, those cascading arpeggios and the kind of melodic imagination that makes every phrase feel like it's being born right there in the room.

It's a beautiful reminder that the guitar is more than technique: it's personality, groove and pure joy. Study how he weaves single-note runs into his chords, how he keeps the momentum swinging, and how he lets the notes breathe.

Essential listening:
"Nuages" – Pure, poetic melody and elegant phrasing.
"Minor Swing" – The ultimate gypsy swing groove.

When you listen, notice the effortless flow between chord and melody. Pick up your guitar, find the swing, and let the music carry you. 🎶

Theory can feel dry: until you see the pattern. 💡

The I–V–vi–IV progression is built from four scale degrees in a major key:

I = 1st degree : home
V = 5th degree : a perfect fifth above home
vi = 6th degree : the minor colour
IV = 4th degree : a return towards home

In C major, that becomes:
C : G : Am : F

The lightbulb moment? The numbers stay the same. Change the key, and the pattern travels with you. That’s why this progression feels so familiar across countless songs.

Listen for the journey:
home → lift → emotion → return 🎸

Stepping away from the guitar on holiday isn't losing practice time: it's giving your mind and ears the reset they need.

Out here in the arid landscapes of Tenerife, surrounded by volcanic rock and rugged cacti, it’s a good reminder that growth happens when you slow down. I’ve been using my downtime for quick ear training in Earmaster and diving deep into Billy Cobham and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

What if the recording studio became part of the instrument? 🎸

This week’s Record of the Week is Les Paul and The New Sound.

Les Paul wasn’t only a player with blinding speed and precision. He was an inventor who pushed the electric guitar forward and helped transform recording itself.

Through experiments with solid-body guitar design, overdubbing, echo and multitracking, Les Paul showed that a performance could be built layer by layer. The studio was no longer just a place to capture music : it became a creative instrument.

That idea still shapes how we record, practise and arrange guitar today. Every loop, harmony, doubled part and home-studio experiment owes something to pioneers like Les Paul.

When you listen, pay attention to the clarity of the guitar, the stacked parts and the sense of one musician creating a whole musical world.
