10th October every year is World Mental Health Day.

This year’s theme is “Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority”.

A huge task, especially given how many negative things are currently affecting our world today.

Despite all the challenges around us, each one of us can help improve both our own mental wellbeing, as well as the mental wellbeing of others.

Small steps taken by many can add up to giant leaps for everybody.

So today and everyday, please think about just one aspect of your life that you are grateful for, no matter how big or small this may be. Be thankful for it, remember the feeling it gives you and carry that feeling with you throughout your day.

Please take the time to do this every day - you’ll be surprised the difference it will make to your life.

And if you’d like to help others to have better mental wellbeing too, please just take the opportunity to say hello to someone, thank someone, or pay someone a compliment - these are small and simple things we can all do pretty easily, but what a huge difference they’d make to our world if we all did them each and every day !

Have a lovely day ! 😀

What will you learn, or remember during Black History Month, October 2022 ?

Today I’ve learned about Ella Baker, an African-American civil rights and human rights activist. (b.1903 - d.1986)

She was co-founder of The Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the principal channel of student commitment to the US civil rights movement during the 1960s.

She worked alongside some of the most celebrated civil rights leaders of the 20th century, including Martin Luther King Jr.

She has also been referred to as “one of the most important American leaders of the 20th century and perhaps the most influential woman in the civil rights movement".

In 1994, Ella Baker was inducted into the US National Women's Hall of Fame.

And yet, hardly anyone has ever heard of her. Why is that ?

This time last year, our teenage daughter’s best friend tragically took her own life.

No one in her family or my own will ever be the same again and she is in our thoughts every single day.

Su***de is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK, but su***des among teenage girls and young women have almost doubled in recent years.

World Su***de Prevention Day takes
Place on 10 September each year and provides the opportunity for people across the globe to raise awareness of su***de and su***de prevention.

The current theme is ‘creating hope through action’.

You are asked to help create hope through action, by reflecting on how you can support someone in your life who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or may be at risk of su***de.

Encouraging understanding and sharing experiences creates a society where people have the confidence to take action, building hope for the future.

If you run a business, do you care as much about your staff as you do for your clients ?

How do you show you care for and value them equally ?

What practical things do you do in the areas of customer satisfaction and employee wellbeing which clearly demonstrate you care for both ?

What metrics do you regularly measure for both, to check if what you do is working ?

If you’re now thinking perhaps you don’t value them as equally as you originally thought, perhaps it’s time to do something about that ?

Let’s Connect !

Mental Health Awareness Week 9 - 15 May 2022:

This year’s theme being the impact loneliness can have on our mental health and the difference connecting with others can make.

Loneliness can be experienced wherever you are in the world, whether that’s somewhere you find yourself isolated, like many did during the pandemic lockdowns, or ironically, even when you are among huge crowds of people, surrounded by loads of other human beings.

My first personal experience of loneliness was when I moved to London for my first proper job, as a fresh-faced graduate. I moved from the city of Manchester to the city of London, thinking nothing of it, apart from being really excited.

Straight after my move and for what seemed like a lifetime afterwards, I felt like the loneliest person on the planet. I tried to socialise after work, tried to get to know my work colleagues and I went out and about at weekends, but I still felt completely alone. Almost everyone at work was much older than me and commuted into London, few stayed behind after work and fewer still were around at weekends. I found myself wondering if this is what the whole of my adult life was going to be like - living among millions of people, but feeling like I was just on my own all the time.

What kept me going were the regular phone calls I had with family, the occasional visits I had from friends coming to London for a weekend, as well as spending time with the couple of friends I knew who’d also moved to London at the same time as me.

Despite the huge expansion of internet enabled communications since then, people can still find themselves feeling lonely. If you know someone who might be feeling this way, please just give them a quick call, maybe invite them out, or just have a chat with them and see how they’re doing. The impact you’ll have will be immeasurable.

Remember: Awareness without action is just awareness. You have to act for your awareness to mean anything.

Travelling back home from Aberdeenshire today, after a lovely trip to see the folks here.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👋🚘

My first visit since the pandemic hit and also my first time seeing our ‘new’ niece in person. She’s completely adorable, as well as being a real cheeky monkey ! 🥰
She certainly knows how to keep her three older brothers in check too !

I’d forgotten just how beautiful Scotland is, especially in the sunshine, which thankfully put in an appearance every day during my visit.☀️

If you’ve never spent any time North of the border, I’d seriously recommend you try it before thinking of going abroad somewhere.

Beautiful scenery, wonderful people and big hairy cows with huge horns - what more could you ask for ?! Well, apart from maybe temperatures in the double figures ! Although when the sun’s out even 9 degrees seems positively tropical with a body warmer on ! (almost ! 🥶).

Being among lots of greenery, seeing the sea and spending time with loved ones really is a tonic ! 🌲🌊👨‍👩‍👧 😀 Far more therapeutic than any pills, potions or visits to the gym (not that I’ve been for a while !)

Can’t wait for the next visit (when double digit temperatures will hopefully put in a regular appearance !)

Happy Easter !

For those who can this weekend, why not choose to switch off your mobile phone and spend some quality time with your loved ones or friends.

You’ll be amazed how differently you’ll feel.

In fact, why not make a conscious choice to do this every weekend ?

13/04/2022

Are we there yet ??

If you’re waiting for one of these to appear in your life journey, so you can go in a different direction, please remember you can always create your own at any time you decide to.

Don’t think you have to wait until one appears, or you may find you simply run out of fuel before you get there !
