What do you say to a Master?
On a recent vacation touring the Okinawa Islands, I made a point of paying a visit to a Karate Museum in Naha. It was an essential item on our itinerary for any martial arts enthusiast! It is said that the martial art of Karate originates from Okinawa.
At the museum and karate dojĹŤ, we were welcomed by the curator of the museum, the 10th dan Karate master himself, Tetsuhiro Hokama sensei.
I was struck by his disarming humility and openness. He was very welcoming.
At one point, he asked me what questions I had.
To me it felt like part invitation, part challenge!
My mind was buzzing with the many questions I could ask.
But they all felt trivial in nature.
I allowed myself to return my attention within. To quieten my mind.
Then the question came to me.
I asked him the question.
Before he replied, he remarked how much he liked my question, that no one had asked him this question before.
My question was aimed at what he wished for most. After all what does a man who has reached the top of his game wish for next?
I will never forget his answer.
I learned a lot from my question.
It opened up an insight and a deeper connection with someone I had not met before.
It goes to show that if you ask, you will get the answers & questions you seek!
Here in the picture, Sensei Hokama obliged to be photographed with me holding a copy of his book on Karate history!
🫱 When did you last ask a question to someone that you were glad you asked?
