Oh WHAT A DAY! I’ve been at my desk since 8am, it’s now 4pm and I’m still in my PJs 🫣

Ethan 5 marks off a 9 and earned a scholarship to Brentwood!

There are so many more success stories rolling in today. A few near misses that are going back for a remark. And we are praying they get the result they need.

But no matter what happens, we are proud of all of these young people. Who showed up for themselves every week, working for what they wanted.

They have given themselves evidence that they CAN do hard things when times get tough. That resilience is character building and they take with them as they take the next step on their journey.

Class of 2026… you have been incredible and we are privileged to have been a part of your journey. Thank you 😊

When you are so busy signing up new students, you have ZERO time to promote your summer offer 🫣

Those that attended last week were so impressed they have been signing up in their droves today…. Without me even contacting them.

We would normally follow up and see how it went but it hasn’t made it to the top of the to do list yet. But these parents aren’t hanging around!

Please stop. You have enough on your plate without trying to teach your teen algebraic equations. (That’s assuming you can even remember how to do them 🫣).
Stick to the parenting, remove the stress and employ an expert.
With small group prices you can afford to start early before issues escalate.

With over 20 years in the classroom and four teenagers of my own, I have seen exactly how quickly a kitchen table revision session turns into a stand-off while the kettle boils in the background.

If you want to step back and regain your Sunday afternoon, these are the three things I tell every parent to check before they hand the baton over to a tutor:

1. Ensure they have a dedicated A4 lever arch file for each subject with five coloured dividers, rather than one overflowing plastic folder at the bottom of a rucksack.

2. Buy a Casio fx-83GT CW Scientific calculator and write their name on the back in permanent marker, because it is the one every British exam board expects them to know how to use.

3. Swap the vague ‘revision’ goal for a 20 minute timer on a specific past paper question from the AQA or Edexcel website, then stop the clock the moment it pings.

It is much easier to be the mum who provides the biscuits than the one trying to explain long division.

You should be more concerned about their loss of confidence in the classroom than the most recent data drop.

Confidence matters more than your child’s latest test scores.

I used to nod along to talk of tracking and targets. After twenty years in the classroom, I know what actually breaks a student.

One side says ignore grades and focus on happiness. That is not realistic when GCSEs are looming next May.

The other side says drill past papers until they are reciting mark schemes in their sleep just to avoid a revision guide.

I don’t subscribe to either. You can’t opt out of the system, but you can’t ignore the sting when your child feels behind.

The middle ground is protecting their belief that they are actually capable of doing the work.

If they decide they are bad at Maths while you are staring at a worksheet, no amount of data will fix it.

We focus on the wins first. A teenager who thinks they can won’t need you to hover over their shoulder forever.

After 20 years in the classroom and running my own team of specialist teachers, I have seen hundreds of teens who have simply shut down because they are terrified of looking stupid.

One Year 11 student came to us last term barely able to make eye contact over the we**am, let alone answer a question about algebra.

Within three weeks, she was typing her working out into the chat and asking for more challenging exam papers. She just needed a space where her pride wasn’t on the line every time she opened her mouth.

Having managed my own team of teachers for years, I have seen exactly what moves the needle when a child is struggling to look at their revision cards.

Firstly, learning is not linear because the hormonal changes in a teens body make learning hard sometimes. You can’t expect a straight line of progress when their brain is essentially under construction. Some days they will be on fire, and other days they will look at a basic maths problem like it is written in ancient Greek.

Secondly, 1-1 learning is not superior to small group because sometimes it’s good company we need to help us learn. Sitting alone with a tutor can feel like an interrogation, whereas a small group provides the social energy that teenagers actually crave.

Finally, education goes beyond grades because it’s the confidence, resilience and communication skills that really provides opportunities. When you are staring at a school report like it is a performance review of your own life, remember that a grade is just a data point. The way they learn to handle the pressure is what they will actually take into adulthood.

As a teacher for over 20 years and a mum of four teens myself, I know that by the time you reach out for help, the atmosphere at home is usually pretty thick with tension.

One of my Year 11 students was at breaking point in October. Every time his mum mentioned the mock exam timetable, he’d retreat to his bedroom and shut the door to hide the pile of untouched revision cards. She was lying in bed at 11pm scrolling through Mumsnet threads for a solution because her own attempts to help just ended in him shouting and her feeling like a failure.

We stopped focusing on the pile of cards and started focusing on how he actually processed information. We matched him with a tutor who didn’t just know the syllabus but knew how to talk to a frustrated sixteen year old without sounding like a nag.

Four months later, that heavy silence in the hallway has gone. The latest report didn’t just show higher marks. It showed he finally believes he can do the work without his mum standing over him while the kettle boils.
