Tara Brach, a renowned mindfulness teacher and psychologist, developed the RAIN meditation technique to help people manage difficult emotions and experiences with mindfulness and compassion. RAIN stands for Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture, and it can be a powerful tool for both adults and kids.

What is RAIN?

Recognize: Notice what is happening. Recognize the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that are present. For kids, this might mean simply naming what they are feeling, like saying “I’m feeling sad” or “I feel nervous.”

Allow: Allow the experience to be there, just as it is. This means accepting the feelings without trying to fix or change them. For children, this could mean telling themselves, “It’s okay to feel this way.”

Investigate: Explore the experience with curiosity. Ask yourself why you might be feeling this way and what your body is experiencing. Kids can think about where they feel their emotions in their bodies, like a tightness in their stomach or a heaviness in their chest.

Nurture: Offer yourself kindness and compassion. This might involve telling yourself something comforting or imagining a warm, caring presence. For kids, this could mean giving themselves a hug or imagining someone they love giving them a hug.

Remember: Mindfulness is a journey, and it’s okay to take small steps. Encourage your kids to practice regularly and be patient with themselves as they learn and grow.

Having a morning routine is essential for kids as it sets a positive tone for the entire day. A consistent routine helps children develop good habits, enhances their time management skills, and reduces stress. Starting the day with activities like a healthy breakfast, some light exercise, and a bit of reading or planning can boost their mood, focus, and productivity. Encouraging a structured morning routine not only fosters discipline but also instills a sense of responsibility and independence in children.
