🚧 Exciting changes are happening at Dalmain Primary! 🌿✨
This week we’ve been busy with the first phase of our playground regeneration project as part of the Stage 2 playground redevelopment.
A huge thank you to for their incredible work! We loved watching the digging & building across the week too…. 🤩
The transformation began with the removal of a dysfunctional and certainly not weatherproof structure, making way for an exciting new outdoor area. We can’t wait to welcome a fantastic new play surface, an improved outdoor learning space, and a beautiful outdoor classroom and reading area for everyone to enjoy.
This is just the beginning! 👀
Watch this space to see what’s coming next as we continue to create inspiring outdoor environments for our children to learn, play and thrive.
Dalmain Primary SE23
Welcome to Dalmain, a vibrant & friendly community school in the heart of SE23, where children thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
Here, every child is recognised as a unique & curious learner, equipped with the skills to succeed.
Today was another lovely day at Dalmain! 🌟
This morning, Year 2 put their taste buds to the test during DT as they prepared for making a delicious Chana Masala later this month. The children sampled fresh mint, coriander, natural yoghurt and mango chutney, with nearly everyone bravely trying something new! 🌿🥭
The fresh mint was a huge hit, bringing plenty of zingy, energising reactions, while coriander certainly divided opinion! Alongside our tasting session, we explored festivals and cultural celebrations from around the world, discussing the important role food plays in bringing communities together. The children loved learning about different traditions and the special dishes associated with them, and they are now incredibly excited to get cooking! 🍲🌍
In the afternoon, Year 6 got busy in the kitchen as part of Eco Week, baking some truly delicious banana muffins. 🧁🍌 Their learning this week has focused on Fairtrade, why it exists and how it supports growers and producers around the world.
Using Fairtrade bananas and sugar, the children mixed up a wonderfully messy batter, reducing the sugar content by adding an extra banana instead. As the muffins baked, the classroom filled with the comforting aromas of cinnamon and vanilla, much to everyone’s delight!
While we waited, we had thoughtful discussions about Fairtrade, global trade networks and how food makes its way from growers to our shelves. The children showed a great understanding of the importance of ensuring producers receive a fair share of the profits and recognised the positive impact Fairtrade can have on communities.
The best part? Enjoying the warm muffins fresh from the oven! They certainly didn’t last long. 😊
Year 3 were in the kitchen this week making healthier homemade crisps! 🥔🌱
We explored how a potato undergoes ultra-processing to become a packet crisp and discussed the impact this can have on the nutritional value of the final product. The children then identified other root vegetables that could be transformed into delicious crisps and considered ways to cut out many of the less healthy elements of the traditional crisp-making process.
We also had a great discussion about packaging, food waste and single-use plastics before getting hands-on with rotary vegetable graters to prepare our own crisps. Using potatoes, turnips, parsnips, beetroot and sweet potatoes, we lightly seasoned them with sea salt, garlic powder and oregano, added just a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and baked them until perfectly crisp.
The finished crisps were packaged in recyclable paper bags and, most importantly, the children absolutely LOVED them! 😋♻️
🍓🌿 Another great Eco Week day at Dalmain Primary! 🌿🍓
This morning, we made delicious seasonal fruit salads with Year 1, featuring juicy strawberries and fragrant mint freshly picked from the Bloom Community Kitchen HQ garden. 🍓✨
As we chopped, mixed, and tasted, we explored how the seasons affect the fruit and vegetables available to us, how seasons happen at different times around the world, and why eating produce that is in season locally often means fresher, tastier, and more nourishing food.
The highlight of the session? Learning to “slap” the mint leaves to release their wonderful aroma before adding them to the salads! 🌱👏 The children absolutely loved it — and the fruit salads were a huge hit too!
A fantastic morning of learning, growing, and tasting together. 💚
🐠🌊 Children in Year 1 have been learning about coral reefs and the vital role they play in supporting life in our oceans. As part of their learning, they created these beautiful coral reef sculptures using clay and Mod Roc, before painting them with vibrant marbling inks. 🎨✨
The children worked so hard on their creations and were incredibly proud of their finished sculptures – and rightly so! 🤩👏
