Here are a few simple ways to keep your child engaged during weekends.

1. Pick Up a Book They’ll Actually Enjoy
Forget compulsory reading for a moment. Let them choose a novel, biography, magazine, or even a topic they’re curious about. When they enjoy what they’re reading, learning comes naturally.

2. Learn a New Skill Online
From coding and graphic design to photography, cooking, or a new language, there are countless free resources that can help them discover a new passion.

3. Turn Screen Time Into Growth Time
Not all screen time is wasted. Encourage them to watch a thought-provoking documentary, take a virtual museum tour, or explore educational videos that spark curiosity.

4. Get Creative
Writing, drawing, designing, making music, editing videos, or building something from scratch can boost creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

5. Have Conversations That Make Them Think
Talk about current events, future careers, travel, university goals, or even a big question like, “If you could solve one problem in the world, what would it be?” Sometimes, the best lessons come from meaningful conversations.

A relaxed weekend doesn’t have to mean a pause in learning. With a little creativity, you can help your child or teen stay curious, inspired, and ready for the week ahead.

Education is evolving, and staying informed can help parents make better decisions for their children’s future. Here are five key trends shaping education in 2026:

AI Integration in Classrooms
AI is becoming part of everyday learning, helping personalise lessons and improve student engagement. Digital literacy and responsible AI use are now essential skills.

Rise of Hybrid Learning
Blended learning combines classroom teaching with online resources, giving students greater flexibility while building independence and digital skills.

Increased Focus on Employability
Schools are placing more emphasis on communication, leadership, problem-solving, and real-world experience to prepare students for future careers.

Growth in International Pathways
More students are accessing global education through foundation programmes, pathway courses, and transfer routes to top universities.

Skills-Based Admissions
Universities are looking beyond grades, considering personal statements, extracurricular activities, portfolios, and leadership experience alongside academic performance.

By staying informed about these education trends in 2026, parents can make confident decisions about their child’s schooling, university preparation, and study abroad opportunities.

The UK government is considering proposals that could require students to have a pass in GCSE English before becoming eligible for university student loans.

Supporters argue that the measure could help strengthen literacy standards and better prepare students for higher education, while critics have raised concerns about its potential impact on access to university for some learners.

If introduced, the policy could influence how students plan their academic pathways and prepare for university applications in the future.

For families exploring UK education opportunities, developments like these highlight the importance of understanding admission requirements and policy changes early.

The UK government has announced plans to prohibit children under the age of 16 from accessing major social media platforms from Spring 2027. The move is aimed at improving online safety and protecting young people from harmful content and addictive digital features.

The proposed restrictions are expected to apply to platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, and X, while messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal are likely to remain exempt. Additional safeguards, including restrictions on livestreaming and contact from strangers, are also being considered for younger users.

The legislation is expected to be introduced to Parliament later this year, with full implementation targeted for early 2027.

What do you think?
Will stricter social media regulations help protect young people, or will enforcing such a ban prove difficult?

A recent investigation by the UK’s exams regulator found that some IELTS candidates were issued incorrect results due to errors in an automated marking system.

For students planning to study abroad, this serves as an important reminder of how crucial English language test results can be, especially as they may influence university admissions and visa applications.

The affected organisation has since corrected the errors, offered support to impacted candidates, and introduced additional measures to strengthen its marking processes.

At ALTECS, we understand that navigating the study abroad process can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’re committed to keeping you informed with relevant updates that may affect your educational journey.
