One for parents today, while there's still time to think calmly.

If results came in under a medical offer, a review of marking is one of the routes families reach for. Genuine option β€” and the one most often misunderstood.

The deadline catches people out. Where a university place depends on the outcome it has to be a priority review of marking, closing 20 August this summer. The school submits it β€” your first call is the exams officer, not the exam board.

The part nobody enjoys saying: there's no grade protection. A review can move a grade down as easily as up.

A fair test before requesting one: how close was the mark? One or two off a boundary is worth a look; a wide gap is much harder to justify. A teacher will usually tell you honestly which one you're looking at.

Cost is roughly Β£61–£68 per component, generally refunded if the grade changes.

If a review isn't the route, a resit might be β€” though medical schools vary a great deal on accepting resits, so that needs checking school by school.

For any parent whose house is making Clearing calls this morning.

The hard part: the call has to come from your child, not from you. Admissions teams want to hear it from the applicant, and it's the applicant they're assessing. Your job is the desk, not the phone β€” grades written down, UCAS ID and Clearing Number to hand, course page open.

The call has three parts: why this course, why you, why this university. Then ask whether places are available, and let the silence sit until they answer.

Two things worth heading off before they dial: "I'll take anything", which sounds like no plan, and accepting the first offer out of relief. Asking for an hour to think is normal. Nothing has to be decided in the first minute.

If today means stepping away from Medicine, that deserves a proper conversation rather than a rushed one this morning.

Results day is tomorrow morning.

If there's a teenager in your house waiting on A-level grades, this is the guide worth having open at breakfast β€” what happens and when, what they should have with them, and what the options actually are in both directions.

Two things worth doing tonight: save their university's admissions number into a phone, and find their UCAS login and Personal ID before the morning, not during it.

One thing worth knowing: if the grades come in under the offer, that is not automatically the end of the place. Universities make those calls on the morning, and UCAS often updates after they do. The worst decisions tomorrow will be the ones made in the first hour.

If it would help to talk the options through with someone outside the family, book a call with us β€” link below, or message this page. We answer every one.

If your child is sitting the UCAT this year, there are two decisions in front of them.

Booking closes 16 September at 15:00; the last sitting is 24 September. Access arrangements close earlier, on 10 September. It's worth holding a slot now β€” a booking can be moved or cancelled free up to 24 hours before, with a full refund, and there's no reschedule fee.

Choosing which date to sit is separate, and it should come from their mock scores rather than the calendar. Two full timed mocks landing within about 50 points of each other usually means they've plateaued, and more weeks buy little. Still climbing? The later date earns its place. (Our coaching rule of thumb, not an official UCAT measure.)

September is already heavy β€” term restarting, results, UCAS drafts. Choosing the date deliberately takes one thing off that pile.

If your teen's UCAT mock scores have flatlined, more practice tests won't fix it β€” a change of approach will.

This is what we look for: why each mark is lost, then targeted drilling on that error type.
