Happy New Year from me Cala, The London Montessorian.

It has been the children’s 1st week back at school for 2026 and also my 1st week of tutoring for the new year. Some families are still enjoying an extra week off, but this week I was so happy to welcome 1 new child. Next week I will be welcoming 1 returning child from last spring, plus a new child joining for a taster session, which I am really looking forward to.

This week I have worked with 2 x 7-year-olds, 1 x 9-year-old and 1 x 12-year-old. A lovely mix of ages and stages, and a reminder that learning is never one size fits all. Every session is shaped around the individual child and their abilities, so this carousel shows a mix of maths and English and practical life skills.

One of my 7-year-olds explored singular and plural, building meaning first: singular means 1, plural means more than 1. We focused on the early plural pattern of adding s and the child’s reaction said it all: “I really like this activity, it was so much fun.” We also explored place value and static addition (addition without change), alongside early reading and double sounds.

My other 7-year-old is new to the Montessori approach and began their journey with place value using the golden beads. They said it was “a bit tricky” and “a bit challenging”, but also “lots of fun.”

With my 9-year-old, we focused on reading comprehension through discussion, inference and retelling, then used the small bead frame to strengthen place value and accuracy in multiplication.

With my 12-year-old, we focused on practical life and fine motor development to support independence in everyday tasks and build concentration, using smaller transferring, tong work, opening and closing containers, and careful hand work such as hammering and painting.

Here is to a new year of purposeful work and children feeling proud of themselves.

To support one of the children’s interests in our Reception Ready sessions, I’ve added these Peppa Pig and Bluey figures to our learning space.

In the next few slides, I have shared some simple ways I am combining her favourite characters with Montessori literacy activities like spelling with moveable letters, exploring phonetic sounds, and playing “I spy” games.

It’s been a wonderfully busy few months, and I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the children and families I’ve had the joy of working with.

From ages 3 to 12, I’ve been supporting children with their maths, English, fine motor development, concentration, and SEN needs, each with their own unique journey. Whether they come from homeschool, mainstream, Steiner, Montessori, independent, or special educational needs settings, it’s incredible to see how beautifully the Montessori approach adapts and how much the children enjoy the activities.

Here’s a little insight into what I’ve been doing recently. It’s a privilege to take Montessori into family homes across London, helping children grow in confidence and capability, no matter their background.

This child is diving into literacy as part of my Maths and English Foundations Tutoring Program at home. Here’s a glimpse of his learning journey:

Slide 2:
He begin by matching word cards to corresponding pictures, reinforcing his understanding of common spelling patterns and word families.

Slide 3:
Using the Small Moveable Alphabet, he spells the words independently, reinforcing his understanding of phonetic patterns and word construction.

Slide 4:
He then check his answers against the word cards, using a built-in control of error to spot and correct any mistakes.

Slide 5:
To cement his learning, the child puts pen to paper, writing the words in a list, which strengthens fine motor skills and bridges the gap between reading and writing.

A control of error is a Montessori tool that empowers children to self-correct. It not only develops critical thinking but also builds self-esteem by allowing the child to take charge of their learning journey.

This tailored approach ensures foundational literacy skills are nurtured in a way that is engaging, confidence-boosting, and child-led.
