It was so wonderful to spend time yesterday with violinist The Official Julia Fischer in the VVSA. Our musicians had a chance to ask her questions and we all came away tremendously inspired. One of the highlights was asking her about how she maintains her level of performance while on a demanding concert tour.
Her response: "There is no day that I do not practice scales. It has only happened two or three times in my life that I picked up the violin and played something without having played scales first. It just doesn't happen. I then play a movement of Bach and at least one or two Paganini caprices each day.
When I'm on tour with something familiar like the Sibelius Concerto, I always have my iPad with me so I can learn new repertoire. When you remain with only the pieces that you know, your technique gets lower. You can maintain your technique only by learning new pieces." - Julia Fischer
