In Memoriam: Professor John Wilkes (1940 – 2026)
Chairperson of the Board of Governors, GQS

The Global Board of Quality and Standards (GQS) announces with deep sorrow the passing of our esteemed Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Professor John Stuart Wilkes, who transitioned on February 1, 2026, at the age of 86.

Professor Wilkes was a titan of academic and operational excellence. His tenure as Chairperson was marked by a relentless pursuit of global benchmarks and an unwavering belief that education, when paired with rigorous standards, is the most powerful tool for human advancement.

✳️ A Legacy of Global Impact
Before leading the GQS Board, Professor Wilkes established a storied career that spanned continents and disciplines. A scholar of Mathematics and Management, he served as:

- Emeritus Dean of Academics at the American Institute of Applied Sciences in Switzerland.
- President of the Hodos University for Business and Engineering.
- Senior Consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and UNCTAD.

His professional journey was a literal map of global service, taking him from Brazil and Southeast Asia to Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Africa. To Professor Wilkes, "Quality" was not a mere metric; it was a mission he carried to every corner of the globe.

✳️ A Visionary Leader and Mentor
Within GQS, Professor Wilkes was more than a Chairperson. He was a "North Star" for our governors and members. He transformed board meetings into masterclasses of wisdom, often drawing from his vast life experiences to solve modern organizational challenges. He led the Hodos Scientific Institute with the same grace, patience, and intellectual curiosity that defined his entire life.

✳️ Our Deepest Condolences
The Board of Governors, the executive team, and the entire GQS global community extend our profound sympathies to his wife, Christine, and his family. We also recognize the many students and professionals worldwide who considered him a "grandfather of science" and a transformative mentor.

Professor Wilkes often spoke of the "Enduring Impact of Knowledge." Today, as we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the fact that his own impact is woven into the very fabric of the standards and institutions he helped build.

Decisions regarding demotion or disqualification are made by a Special Commission, formed specifically for such purposes.

Members of this commission are drawn from the Board of Governors and the Board of Executives to ensure a fair and thorough evaluation.
