This week’s guest speaker was Peter Ruis, the Managing Director of John Lewis, who has had an illustrious career in retail in various positions: from buying, to marketing, to management, working at brands like Jigsaw and John Lewis. He talked to the students about, when given 3 coats, how to spot the bestseller, the medium seller and the ‘dog’’; about the first advert that caught his eye, the 1980s Levi’s advert for 501s which had people queuing down the street, as well as the famous John Lewis Christmas adverts he has gone on to make. The students had some brilliant questions for Peter, such as how John Lewis make a profit on big brands, how the business model works given it is a cooperative, how brands like John Lewis respond to global crises like the war in Iran or the shakiness of Starmer’s premiership – as well as how much our shopping habits are tracked! Peter’s talk always makes for fascinating listening, as it is appealing to students interested in marketing, advertising, business, finance, statistics, retail – the list goes on. A big thank you to Peter for coming in so many times!

Our most recent guest speaker was Dr Nicky Mackie, a Consultant HIV specialist working across several London hospitals.

Nicky is a frequent flier to the WLFS as her talk is fascinating for all students: whether they are interested in Medicine and in seeing the biology behind the transmission of HIV; a socio-political scientist, interested in the stigma, the marketing campaigns of the 1980s and in the defunding of HIV programmes in the US and the consequences of this worldwide; or a historian, interested in the development of this one-time pandemic into a completely treatable disease today. Nicky shared some fascinating statistics about HIV, such as that it is more common in women than in men (53% vs 47%). Students asked some fascinating questions and we were very lucky to have Nicky give up her clinic time to talk to the students.
