Recent updates to the STCW Code are placing greater emphasis on preventing violence and harassment at sea. To reflect these changes, we’ve added a new module to our Personal Safety and Social Responsibility eLearning course.

The new content addresses bullying, harassment and sexual harassment at sea, reflecting one of the most significant recent developments in STCW training requirements on preventing and responding to violence and harassment onboard.

The update helps ensure seafarers are better prepared to support safe and respectful working environments at sea.

New course added to our catalogue: Common Bulk Cargoes ⚓

This interactive elearning course covers the safe carriage of the most common bulk cargoes, including the properties and risks of coal, iron ores, and grain when shipped in bulk. Learners will be introduced to the requirements under the IMSBC Code and the International Grain Code.

This course is suitable for deck officers who have not previously sailed on dedicated bulk carriers, and can act as a refresher for seafarers with previous bulk carrier experience.

ISG is committed to our mission of producing the highest quality online maritime training. A part of that mission includes tackling sensitive topics, such as bullying, harassment, coercion, and sexual assault. While no one likes to think of such incidents taking place onboard their ship, the unfortunate reality is that they do occur and ignoring it, because it makes us uncomfortable is not the solution. The solution to avoiding these incidents taking place onboard your ship is through proper education and training.

In May 2024, The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) met for its 108th session, where they adopted amendments to the Seafarers' Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Code (STCW Code). These amendments outline new mandatory minimum requirements for basic training and instructions for all seafarers, with the aim to provide seafarers with the understanding of violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, as well as the ways to prevent such incidents occurring. These amendments are expected to enter into force from the 1st of January 2026.

We have always strived to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to the courses that we provide and have achieved this through extensive research and careful consideration of the needs within the industry, as well as the topics discussed by various maritime organisations. One area that we identified as needing additional training material related to sexual violence. We designed our Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment eLearning course to provide learners with training that was both practical and meaningful, all while ensuring the topics discussed were treated with the sensitivity and respect that they deserved. This course was released in 2024 with great success, and has since been updated to include the requirements of the most recent amendments.

✨ New for 2025! ✨

We have just added ISM Code Awareness to our growing eLearning catalogue.

The International Safety Management (ISM) Code aims to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for the prevention of marine pollution. This is achieved through setting out a framework for establishing and maintaining a Ship Management System (SMS) onboard ships and within ship management companies.

Our course covers key topics:
⚓ THE NEED FOR THE ISM CODE – Why the ISM Code was introduced, who it applies to, and what it contains.
⚓ THE SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – What an SMS is, the contents of an SMS, and how it relates to seafarers.
⚓ CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS – The purpose of both the Document of Compliance (DOC) and the Safety Management Certificate (SMC).
⚓ THE DESIGNATED PERSON ASHORE – The purpose of a DPA, the responsibilities of a DPA, and the importance of communication between shore based and shipboard personnel.
⚓ PROCEDURES, CHECKLISTS & PLANS – Who is responsible for ensuring compliance, the benefits of checklists and plans, and the importance of continuous improvement.
⚓ INSPECTIONS – The various inspections required under the ISM Code, the time between ISM audits, and the importance of inspecting and maintaining the vessel’s machinery and equipment.

As we step into 2025, let’s all make it our New Year’s resolution to prioritise mental health and wellbeing at sea!

Working at sea can present various challenges that can impact mental health, including working in stressful environments, working long hours, dealing with social isolation, and being away from friends and family.

Mental health problems can be difficult to spot as unlike physical injuries, you can’t see the damage. Many seafarers struggle to open up about their struggles either through feeling embarrassed or not having someone to reach out to. Research published in the BMC, conducted by various institutions found that one third of seafarer’s showed signs of PTSD, more than one in ten had symptoms of anxiety, and 14% displayed signs of depression.

So this year let’s all:
👁 Take extra care in spotting the signs of poor mental health
🗣 Be willing to speak out about our struggles
🤝 Extend a helping hand to those struggling

Our Mental Health and Wellbeing at Sea course helps learners to understand the impact of poor mental health and wellbeing, spot the signs of mental health problems in yourself and others, and to identify the support available to them. By making use of ISG’s powerful LMS, you will be able to track your progress and view your course certificates at any time, helping you to keep this New Year’s resolution.

From all of us at ISG, we are wishing you a very happy and healthy 2025.
