In this video I talk about the controversial subject of organism ratios. This means bacteria and fungi levels: is it important to try and balance the concentrations of these microorganisms in your soil, to grow better plants and crops. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

These days I am being asked by more and more people to test their soil due to concerns over heavy metals and contaminants. I thought that this would be a good topic for discussion, particularly after reading an article referencing a recent study on the effects of lead absorption in tomatoes. So, in this video I talk identifying the perceived risk and some of the other realities in terms of the real risks to your health. And, with all of that said, where should YOU start if you have concerns that your soil might be contaminated.

Unfortunately you might need to pay a lot of money to access the original research though😞

Many people claim that using seaweed can improve the germination of seeds when growing plants. In this video I set up a simple grow test to see if this is the case. I use a gel based seaweed product in conjunction with one of my favourite salad items - radishes. The aim is to see if there is any clear difference in the growth. Some of the other claimed benefits of this particular seaweed product is that it will feed and nourish the soil life. So let's see what happens!

Recently we undertook a trial in the laboratory looking at the effects of how an increase in plant diversity affects the soil microbial communities around the plant roots. This video summarises the results from that trial and provides a take away that you an apply to grow healthier plants and crops.

It's been almost a year since I launched the channel. Wow! Recently though, things have been very hectic, for a whole host of reasons, and my posting schedule has suffered a bit. So, I thought I would make a little time in this video to tell you about some of the trials and tribulations of Simonsoil. Don't worry though, I'll be resuming the usual assortment of knowledge and information about soil to help you grow better food, plants and crops in your garden in the next video!
Don't forget I love to hear your questions and comments so do give me your feedback.
This is an introductory video for you covering the topic of mycorrhizal fungi. In it I talk about what this special fungi is and how it differs in its relationships with plants and their roots - especially when compared to other soil fungi. I'll tell you what the different types are, their differences, and most importantly, why it is a huge benefit to most of the plants and crops that you are growing. I hope you enjoy it.

Boy it's been a busy week! So, in this short video I give a quick tour of one of our little growing areas that we call our Secret Garden. I talk through the containers that we have and briefly discuss how I have made up the soil the I pick a few plump radishes before the dog attacks the neighbour!🙂
I hope you enjoy it.
Weeding is the bane of many a gardener's life. But should we rethink our relationship with these undesirable plants and use them as tools to help us build better soil? Join me in this video as I discuss are weeds are help rather than hinderance?

By popular demand, this is a vlog video from a recent visit to a local grower where I talk you through some of the workings of a vineyard, whist showing you how I collect soil form these perennial, and highly valuable crops.
Your plants are working harder than you think. In fact they are probably doing a lot of the work in building soil health, that you're doing - and you don't even know it! In this video I talk about the importance of fine roots, and how the shedding of old roots, to give way to new, can help to build soil organic matter.

Cheers everyone! Happy Tuesday!.
Here's a measuring cylinder of muddy water for you.
This photo was taken moments before delivering a lesson tonight as part of my school of soil course.
Sometimes though, technology doesn't always work with us and there's always a risk when doing stuff live that things won't always go to plan.🤦
Needless to say, I think I'm going to have to re-record tonight's module due to intermittent stuttering ✅
Presumably connectivity issues? arising from the locals watching Netflix🤣
Never mind though. Still the rest of the week left for it all to come right😁👍

In this video I check in on my friend Doug who, around 18 months ago, made the transition to No Dig. In my original video from October 2021, we undertook some soil analyses to help Doug on his way. Now we're back to check in and see what tools and techniques he has added to his polytunnel and what activity is going on in the veggie garden in early spring.
