A VERY simple maths game that can be so easily adapted! With this student, we used two dice (up to 6) and rolled both at the same time, then multiplied the numbers. We then kept a total score and the winner was whoever reached 100 first! You can use different dice to make it more challenging, for example, dice up to 9, 12 or even 18! Great game to warm up the brain for learning.

A bit of Play-Doh, and suddenly, working on punctuation just got very exciting! This student worked very hard to identify capital letters, commas, apostrophes and full stops. We also looked at inverted commas and other ways to finish a sentence (question marks or exclamation marks).

Whilst rest, recovery and play are VITAL over the summer break (for children and staff!), it is also important to plan activities that can support your child to keep their skills active. I can tell you that this definitely does happen! If you don't use it, you lose it!

I will be offering PAYG summer sessions between the 1st and 25th of August. Please message me if you would like to book a weekly slot or just 1 or 2 "get ahead" or "catch up" sessions ready for September.

These sessions are online ONLY.

Summer is fast approaching - 5 weeks to go! If you're a parent who would like to focus on your child's writing this summer, then this is the right post for you!

Pie Corbett is an English educational trainer, writer, author and poet who has written over two hundred books. He is now best known for creating the Talk for Writing approach to learning, widely used within UK primary schools.

His quick-fire daily sentence games can have an impact on children's writing. One of the basic writing skills is the ability to construct and vary sentences rapidly - almost without thinking about it.

When introducing new sentence patterns, remember to start
orally - so they hear the pattern and then say it. This can be followed by using cards or a washing line so that they see and move the words around and physically manipulate the sentences - suitable for all children, especially the kinaesthetic learners. Finally, they can begin to move into writing on mini whiteboards.

Keep the session speedy - the idea is to become automatic at
writing, not laboured. Be ruthless on full stops! One handy tip is to tell children, 'Don't show me until you have checked'. The idea is for the children to think, write, and re-read, checking for quality and accuracy.

Practise sentence games and use the same sorts of sentences in modelled and shared writing. Make sure children use the sentence types in their own writing. This is vital - try working on a sentence (or paragraph) that then has to be 'dropped' into a longer piece of writing. Store good sentences in writing journals for future use.

Reach out to me if you're looking for support with your child's writing.

Understanding the benefits of collaborative learning and its positive impact on students, I have expanded our services to include group sessions alongside our existing individual tutoring options. Group sessions provide an excellent opportunity for children to engage with their peers, foster teamwork, and enhance their learning in a dynamic and interactive environment.

Here are some key advantages of my new group sessions:

- Enhanced Engagement: By working together in a group, children can actively participate in discussions, share ideas, and learn from one another. This collaborative environment promotes engagement and encourages children to explore concepts from different perspectives.

- Improved Social Skills: Group sessions provide a platform for children to develop vital social skills, such as communication, cooperation, and teamwork. They can learn to articulate their thoughts, actively listen to others, and collaborate effectively, preparing them for real-world interactions.

- Cost-Effective Option: Group sessions offer a cost-effective alternative to individual tutoring, making high-quality education accessible to a wider range of students and families. It allows children to receive expert guidance while sharing the learning experience with their peers.

- Personalised Attention: Despite the group setting, I maintain a focus on individualised attention. I ensure that each child's unique needs and learning goals are addressed during the sessions, providing personalised support within the group dynamic.

Whether your child thrives in one-on-one settings or benefits from collaborative learning, I have the flexibility to accommodate their preferences and ensure their educational needs are met.
To learn more about our group sessions and discuss how they can benefit your child, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am here to answer any questions you may have and provide detailed information regarding session schedules, subject availability, and pricing options.

At Education at Core, I am dedicated to continuously enhancing my offerings to provide the best possible support for your child's educational journey. I look forward to embarking on this new phase with you and helping your child thrive through group sessions.

Thank you for your ongoing trust and support!

Another one from the 'Philosophy for Children' series! These questions are great for bonding, shaping ideas and, most importantly, teaching your child!

Take turns to share something you have gained from this discussion. This might be:
- something you know;
- an idea you have now;
- something you have learnt how to do;
- something you now understand a little better.

Establishing what a child finds difficult and things they enjoy is a crucial part of my work as a teacher and a tutor.

Here I worked with a child who finds it hard to express their feelings, so having the visuals helped to sort items into three categories: 'good at', 'ok', and 'need help'.

When working with your child, I will work hard to establish their motivators and work with them on things they find difficult!

The colours of the background are not random at all! They are in line with The Zones of Regulation, an excellent approach for children to learn names for the feelings they experience. When confident with the colours and the emotions, they can say, ‘I am in the blue zone right now, and I’m feeling sad’. Here is the website for more information: https://www.zonesofregulation.com/index.html
