Ask yourself these questions to find out if your Acting Class is right for you 👇

1) Is the work actually improving? 📈

When you see people put up work and receive feedback then go again, does that work actually get better?

Being in class is great but if you’re not seeing real growth in yourself and your class mates, it’s likely something is off.

2) Are you getting enough time to work? ⏰

A problem with a lot of classes out there is that they are over subscribed. Paying good money to work for 10 minutes every week is not a good return on investment in our opinion.

At Acting Practice we keep class sizes strictly limited to ensure everyone gets time to work. It’s not rare to see people on stage for almost an hour sometimes.

We sweat the detail and make sure everyone leaves having improved.

3) Are you leaving clearer or more confused? 🤔

A lot of classes sadly are use over complicated methods and out dated acting jargon.

The purpose of a class should be to de mystify acting technique - simple to understand, easy to apply.

If you’re leaving every class scratching your head, it’s possible your teacher doesn’t fully understand what they’re teaching you themselves.

4) Is the there a positive culture? 🌱

Positive doesn’t mean blowing smoke up each other’s arses. Class mates should push each other. But there should also be a culture of support. Do actors help each other run lines? Are they reading in for each other? Do you feel like you’re in a community or like you’re competing with everyone else?

This is one of the most common blocks we come across as Actors and once you’re aware of it life becomes so much easier.

And it’s funny because I don’t even know where it comes from, nobody ever taught this to me!

The belief is: I should only do things on stage when “I feel it.”

Or another way to put it: I FEEL ➡️ I ACT

This has got to be one of the most widespread misconceptions in Acting (and in life).

The great thing about action and is that it doesn’t require emotion to be done.

THAT IS WHY ACTION IS RELIABLE!

Emotion is fleeting, it will come and go, if you’re only relying on emotion to fuel your performance you’re in trouble.

In life we do all sorts of things that don’t feel like, did you FEEL like getting out of bed this morning? Did you feel like showering?

I don’t feel like writing this post write now to be honest 😅

Stop waiting for feelings to take Action. To Act is to DO.

So do what you need to get what you want and if the feelings come then great!

I FEEL ➡️ I ACT ❌
I ACT ➡️ I MAYBE FEEL ✅

I dealt with imposter syndrome for years when trying to get into acting and to be honest I still do…

It’s a weird feeling. You have this idea that you’re doing something you’re not supposed to be.

Like at any moment someone is going to tap you on the shoulder and tell you to leave 😂

Part of building the Acting Practice community was about helping me feel more like I belonged in this industry.

But what I’ve learned from the 1,000 + Actors who have attended our classes over the years is that there is no one type of person who can do this.

Anyone no matter what their story can create truthful, compelling work. Everyone has a story to tell.

So next time you get that feeling like you don’t belong, just let it go. It’s just your mind trying to keep you “safe.”

Stop staring at your Scene Partners! Eye contact doesn’t = listening ❌

It’s a nervous habit we get into when we’re not clear on what we’re doing and where we are.

Establish you’re reason for being in the scene, know the space you’re in and allow yourself to look whereevrr you need to.

But don’t get locked in eye contact with your partner. It’s boring for you and the audience.
