🍦 My very amusing student is becoming chattier every day! 💬

We’re currently working on Blank Levels through ice cream shop role play — talking about flavours, what happens if he drops his ice cream, what he could do next, and more.

And apparently, watching me get “angry” because they’ve run out of chocolate is the funniest part! 😂🍫

Learning language, thinking, problem-solving — and having fun along the way. ❤️

🌼 Children’s Language Development

Good morning! 😇❤️

Every child is unique and develops language at their own pace, and that is okay. However, understanding general developmental milestones can help us recognise language difficulties early and provide support sooner.

By around 3–4 years, many children are using around 1,000–1,500 words, following 3-part instructions, using 3–4 word sentences, telling us what they are doing, understanding the function of objects and beginning to use grammar such as is, and, he, she.

By around 5 years, children generally follow conversations more easily and use increasingly complex language and grammar. By 6–7 years, many can follow multi-step instructions, identify categories, describe features and functions, understand fantasy versus reality, make inferences and suggest solutions to problems.

💨 But what about autism?

For autistic children, some of these skills may be delayed, develop differently, develop unevenly, or may not emerge without additional support. A child may have many words but struggle with social communication, or understand much more than they can express.

This is why visual supports, symbols, AAC and appropriate speech and language therapy can be so valuable. We are not trying to make every autistic child develop in exactly the same way. We are helping them find a way to understand, communicate and be understood. 💝

Children today are also exposed to language and technology from a very early age, and many are communicating and self-referring by around 2–2½ years. Technology can be especially helpful for autistic children when used as a communication and visual support.

So these milestones should be used as a guide, not a comparison or judgement.

Every child has their own journey. 🌼🩷
Be patient, observe carefully, and support the child in front of you. ❤️🙏

Below are some examples of situations where children can use their developing language to make inferences and find solutions.

Enjoy your day! 😇🌼❤️🙏

This is more challenging than copying block designs 😁😍

💥Start today💥
A communication system should become part of their life—like an extension of their hand—not something left on a shelf or brought out only during therapy.

I've met children with incredible potential whose voices remained silent, not because they couldn't communicate, but because the tools weren't used consistently. That breaks my heart.

No child should have to wait to be heard.
Their voice matters. Use it. Model it. Carry it with them. Every single day.

Learning shouldn't happen in isolated boxes.

For autistic children, targets are often most meaningful when they're naturally blended into real activities. While practicing cutting, you can also learn clothing vocabulary. While colouring, you can identify and label parts of a house, a plant, or an animal. One activity can support fine motor skills, language, concepts, attention, and communication—all at the same time.

Skills don't exist in isolation, so teaching shouldn't either. Thoughtfully integrated learning opportunities should be a natural part of any well-designed educational program.

Let kids be kids. 💙 Autism doesn't take away the joy of childhood. Their favorite characters can be part of their learning too—because play and education can go hand in hand. Here some ideas 😊😇😍
