How much is the IHS going up in 2024?

In July 2023, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury announced an increase to the surcharge. The extra money will “help to fund [a] pay rise for doctors”.

The proposed increase would see the main rate rising by 66%, from £624 a year to £1,035. The reduced rate for students and under-18s will go from £470 to £776.

The draft Immigration (Health Charge) (Amendment) Order 2023 was laid on 19 October 2023. It will come into force on 16 January 2024 or 21 days after it becomes law, whichever is later.

For example, if the amending order were not to receive final parliamentary approval until 22 January 2024, the surcharge increase would not take effect until 12 February 2024.
