Sepsis can affect anyone of any age, but it’s often treatable if caught quickly, so knowing the signs and symptoms and causes is so important.

We know that awareness saves lives. This is your reminder to learn more or refresh your knowledge about this condition and how it presents in adults and in children.

Some foods need a little extra thought before they're offered to babies and young children.

While many of these foods aren't off limits forever, they can pose a choking risk if they're not prepared appropriately. Others, like honey, should be avoided altogether before your baby's first birthday because of the risk of infant botulism.

Foods to take extra care with include:

• Honey (avoid under 12 months)
• Popcorn
• Whole nuts
• Marshmallows
• Sausages and hot dogs
• Hard boiled sweets
• Grapes
• Whole cherry tomatoes
• Raw hard fruit and vegetables

Simple changes, such as cutting grapes, hot dogs and cherry tomatoes lengthways or into quarters, grating or cooking hard fruit and vegetables, and avoiding foods that are round, hard or potentially sticky (marshmallows), can make mealtimes much safer.

No matter how careful we are, choking can still happen. That's why knowing what to do in an emergency is one of the most important skills any parent, grandparent or carer can learn.

Our award-winning Baby & Child First Aid classes and baby safety classes cover choking prevention, safe weaning, how to recognise the signs of choking and exactly what to do if a baby or child is choking, giving you the confidence to act quickly if you ever need to.

Conjunctivitis is common in children under 5 years old. It's usually caused by infection or allergies and it can be contagious so it can easily spread around nurseries and school settings.

Swipe through the slides to take a look at some of the more common symptoms and advice on how to treat conjunctivitis.

Most instances of conjunctivitis will clear up without the need for medicine within a few weeks, but please see your GP if symptoms persist. If it's a bacterial infection, you might be prescribed antibiotics. But these will not work if it's caused by a virus (viral conjunctivitis) or an allergy.

Is this something your little one has had or is suffering with at the moment?

Research shows that children are up to five times safer travelling rear-facing because, in a frontal collision, the seat supports their head, neck and spine by spreading the crash forces across their back.

Yet despite this evidence, only 22% of UK children aged 2-4 are still travelling rear-facing.
So when parents ask us, "When should I turn my child forward-facing?", we tell them that the legal minimum isn't the same as the safest option.

The need for better protection is clear. In 2024, 559 children were killed or seriously injured as car occupants on UK roads, and 42% of children under 16 who died in collisions weren't wearing an appropriate restraint or seatbelt.

In this carousel, we're explaining the benefits of keeping your child rear-facing for as long as their car seat allows could make all the difference in a crash.

This one change could save a child's life.

This September marks the introduction of Benedict's Law, bringing new statutory allergy guidance into schools across England. For families of children with allergies, it's a really important step forward.

Schools are now expected to have:

✔ A dedicated allergy policy
✔ Annual allergy awareness training for staff
✔ Spare adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs)
✔ Up-to-date healthcare plans for pupils with serious allergies

While no parent ever wants to imagine their child experiencing an allergic reaction at school, knowing there are clear procedures and trained staff in place can offer real reassurance.

If your child has a serious allergy, now is a great time to check that their healthcare plan is up to date and that school has current emergency medication and contact details.

At Mini First Aid, we're proud to support schools with our new CPD-accredited Allergy & Anaphylaxis Awareness for Schools course, helping staff build the practical knowledge and confidence they need to respond when every second counts. Training is happening in schools across our UK network.

Have you spoken to your child's school about how they're preparing for Benedict's Law?

It's the end of my challenge to walk 310k steps in august. And I'm very proud to say that I did it! The children and I spent the last day walking around Port Lympne.

In total I have raised £250 for and as a team we have raised £1303. This is absolutely amazing and I thank each and every one of you for your sponsorship money.

🥶 Okay, it’s not exactly hot water bottle weather yet… but after those mid-30s temperatures, dropping into the 20s has definitely got us thinking about cosy evenings! 😂

If you’re reaching for your trusty hot water bottle again, have you checked how old it is?

Hot water bottles have a recommended lifespan of around 3 years. As they get older, the rubber can deteriorate, making them more likely to split or leak - potentially causing a nasty scald.

🔎 Look for the little flower-shaped symbol. The number in the middle shows the year it was made, the segments represent the months and the dots show the week it was manufactured. This hot water bottle was made in the second week of the 3rd month of 2022.

So before you cosy up with yours this autumn, check the date! 🛏️ 💚And if it’s more than 3 years old, it could be time for a replacement.

Tag someone who needs to check theirs! 👇

🔥 Save the date - National Burns Awareness Day is coming in October!

As part of our August fundraiser for the Children’s Burns Trust, we’ve been sharing burns awareness messages throughout the month - and the conversation doesn’t stop when August does.

This October, National Burns Awareness Day will give us another opportunity to shine a light on burns prevention, first aid and the impact burns can have on children and families 💚

So keep an eye out, keep sharing the message and help us continue to raise awareness of something that can happen in seconds, but have a lasting impact.

Because prevention starts with awareness 💚🔥

So, as you all know I have been taking part in a challenge to raise money for the by walking 310000 in august. Yesterday, I went on a long walk and completely forgot that rain existed! The last part of my walk was in the middle of a thunderstorm and torrential rain, without a jacket or umbrella 😅 it was actually quite nice
