We explore architectural transformations within post-agricultural, post-industrial and perhaps post-corporate communities. AA Visiting School Luxembourg is an educational platform which has been established to investigate the architectural condition of Luxembourg. As both one of the smallest and wealthiest countries in the world, Luxembourg presents a unique opportunity to question the degree of c

ontrol humans may have in designing their built environment in favourable circumstances. Our analysis focuses on widespread architectural conditions as well as specific projects – uncovering the driving forces behind the individuals, institutions and corporations which shape these environments. Operating within the wider field of architecture, we encourage the crossing of design disciplines to explore new ways of assessing, understanding and responding to the specific and universal architectural transformations within the post-agricultural, post-industrial and perhaps post-corporate communities. AAVS Luxembourg offers short courses in architecture to students, professionals and enthusiasts over two weeks during the summer in Luxembourg. Each year we present an extended brief on a particular spatial theme, which goes on to form part of a wider agenda explored over many years. The studio work is structured through a series of field trips, architectural visits, film screenings, theoretical and practical workshops, individual and group tutorials, lectures and seminars with professional experts and guest speakers. We will create research-led and experimental projects, which will be exhibited at the Luxembourg Centre for Architecture in the city centre. AAVS Luxembourg is led by Anouk Ahlborn and Fearghus Raftery as part of the Architectural Association School of Architecture Visiting School (AA). It is organised in collaboration with the luca - Luxembourg Center for Architecture and the Master in Architecture at the University of Luxembourg. MEET THE CURATORS:

Francelle Cane & Marija Marić
DOWN TO EARTH | Luxembourg Pavilion (2023)
18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia

FRANCELLE CANE is an architect, researcher and curator based in Luxembourg. She has been a doctoral researcher at the Chair of Urban Regeneration, University of Luxembourg, since 2021. Her research explores the subject of ruin through the perspective of soil, thus reshaping the relations between the built environment, policies and soil ecologies. For several years, her practice has involved various collaboration types and project formats, including curating and designing exhibitions as a means of research. Cane is the author of Machine opérationnelle (FWB, 2021), The World as a Pavilion. Vjenceslav Richter (Koenig Books, 2020, with Vesna Meštrić and Iwan Strauven), and Enter the Modern Landscape (Bozar, 2019, with Axel Fisher and Iwan Strauven). 1

MARIJA MARIĆ is an architect, researcher and curator based in Luxembourg. She works as a postdoctoral research associate at the Master in Architecture programme, University of Luxembourg, where she also teaches. In 2020, she obtained her doctoral degree from the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), ETH Zurich, with research examining the role of media strategists in the communication, design and globalisation of urban projects. Marija’s work has been presented and published internationally. Her research is organised around the questions of resources, real estate, media, and the production of the built environment and its imaginaries in the context of global capitalism and the global flow of information.1

Luxembourg Pavilion

Visit ‘Down to Earth’ at the Luxembourg Pavilion at the 18th Architecture Biennale in Venice, Italy, with the ‘AA Visiting School Luxembourg – Dædalus (Part I)’ from 28th – 30th August 2023!

‘‘Down to Earth critically unpacks the project of space mining through the perspective of resources. With the space of the pavilion itself turned into a lunar laboratory, a stage where the performance of extraction takes place, the exhibition focuses on the unveiling of the backstages of the space mining project, offering another way of seeing the Moon that goes beyond the current optics of the Anthropocene.’’1

Inspired by ‘Down to Earth’, Dædalus seeks to immerse itself in the respective architectural discourse, in the prospect of exploring the architectural condition of Luxembourg. Following the trip to Venice, the course will investigate the architectural typologies which nurture the emerging space economies across various sites in Luxembourg. The course is open for applications by students, professionals and enthusiasts in the wider field of architecture.
