Reading Meem and Noon Mushaddadah

Before we learn the rules of Meem and Noon Saakin, we first learn how to male the Ghunnah (a nasal sound).

We begin with the meem and noon when they carry a shaddah. The ghunnah happens when the previous vowelled letter joins with the meem or noon. We hold the sound of the noon/ meem for 2 counts. To do this, raise your tongue to press into the roof of the mouth and hold. We then release the Noon or meem with its vowel.

Practice makes perfect! Have a go at some of the words on the screen!

Let's read along and perfect our reading with all 3 short vowels - The fathah, kasra, and the dhamma.

Check the link in bio if you prefer to view it in my YouTube channel!

Read and repeat as many times as necessary to build fluency. Again, make sure heavy letters are pronounced correctly, and vowels are ready equally for 1 beat and are not being stretched or pulled longer!

The next video will be about Madd (your long vowels), so it's absolutely important you/ your child can read short vowel confidentiality before you move on!

Happy learning! ❤️

Read a long with Fathah and Kasra starting with 3 word letters, then 4, and then reading short phrases.

Children can easily follow along as well. I encourage my students to sit down and read a few lines between lessons. Pause and read first. Then, unpause and check. Repeat until they get it right!

✔️ Check that vowels are read short and not stretched.
✔️ Check that heavy letters are pronounced correctly with a full mouth
✔️ Check that light letters are pronounced correctly

See previous videos for how to read each letter with vowels. This is a read a long for those who already know the basics.

Happy learning!

Do you want to perfect your foundation? Then listen and read along!

Almost all of us have a smartphone at home these days, right? You can easily record yourself and playback the clip ..... you will be surprised at what you can catch yourself doing! This will also sharpen your listening skills and prove very useful at correcting your own recitation later or when listening to your child.

I encourage you to listen to your children and make sure they are learning and / or applying things correctly. This can only happen if you yourself are learning and checking your understanding.

Remember, the preservation of the quran is of utmost importance, and it is our duty to ensure we and our families are reading with care!

Reading with Short vowel Dhamma

In this lesson we look at the 3rd short vowel Dhamma.

Arabic has 3 vowels and their sounds are either heavy (said with full mouth) or light (open mouth) There are only 7/8 letters that are heavy and these must be pronounced correctly because some have their similar sounding light (open mouth) letter equivalent which, if read incorrectly, can change the meaning of the word.

It is absolutely important to ensure that the vowels are equal and not stretched. Incorrect stretches can potentially change the meaning of words too! Once the short vowels are read correctly, we will learn the long vowels and how to stretch them.

Practice makes perfect!

Reading letters and words with short vowel Kasra

Assalaamu Alaikum dear sisters!
Let's learn to read correctly with short vowel Kasra. Pay particular attention to the sound of heavy letters, which should sound full mouth. Practice makes perfect! 😃 😊 😀

A very common mistake is the stretching or pulling of a short vowel. We will cover long vowels later in the series, so practice and ensure your short vowels are equal and consistent.

When teaching kids help them to spell each letter and connect them as in the video.

Happy learning!

Sample from class...

The rules are straight forward to understand but application needs close supervision and practice! Qalqalah (to bounce a letter) is simple.... there are only 5 letters with this special character. Where people go wrong is when they accidentally start bouncing off the non Qalqalah letters! This is where you need a teacher who can listen in and bring awareness. Let's work together to keep the Quran unchanged!

Note - The ط and ق are heavy letters (full mouthed). They are often misread as their lighter mouthed cousins ت and ك. Articulation is important. Understanding where the letter originates in the mouth ensures correct pronoinciation. A common mistake is when the light letter connecting to the heavy is pronounced full mouth. Lots of practice and understanding needed to avoid such mistakes ❤️
