📚 Happy World Book Day from our team! What's your favouritebook from your childhood?
We asked everyone in the Elite Tutors team to share the book that stayed with them — and here's what they said:
🦊 Kae loves Fantastic Mr Fox (a Roald Dahl classic for a reason!)
🎭 Tina fell in love with stories through performing Romeo & Juliet
⚡ Sophie is forever a Harry Potter girl
🐰 Mel was moved by When Hi**er Stole Pink Rabbit — a story about courage and family
Here's something we feel strongly about: loving stories is human nature. Every child, including children with dyslexia, deserves to experience the magic of a great story.
If your child finds reading stressful, you don't have to push through the stress to get to the joy. Try audiobooks. Listen together in the car. Read aloud at bedtime. Watch them fall in love with characters and worlds, because the story getting in matters far more than how it gets in.
🗓️ We're hosting a FREE talk for parents on 18th March all about supporting your dyslexic child, including how to help them enjoy stories without the stress.

Does something feel "not quite right" with your child's learning? 💙
Many parents sense it long before dyslexia is ever mentioned by a school.
Maybe your child avoids reading, gets upset over written work, or shows frustration that feels out of proportion. Perhaps they can explain ideas brilliantly out loud, but struggle to get them down on paper.
These signs are not about failure.
The sooner those concerns are understood and addressed, the easier it is to protect confidence, and their love of learning. ✨
We'd love to help. Join us at our free dyslexia talk on Wednesday March 18th at 7:30pm, where our qualified dyslexia assessor and expert team are on hand to answer your questions in a friendly, welcoming space.

Did you know that students who read from paper score significantly higher on comprehension tests than those reading the same material on screens? 📚
A meta-analysis of 49 studies confirms it: physical books are better for learning.
But here's what really matters for schools...
When students can't access text at their age level:
❌ They disengage in History
❌ They struggle in Science exams
❌ They fall behind in Maths
❌ Behavioural issues follow (not defiance—self-protection)
Reading ability is the strongest predictor of academic success across ALL subjects. It also predicts life outcomes: employment, earnings, and future opportunities.
Yet many students reach secondary school without the stamina for GCSE texts. They've grown up on TikTok and Instagram—rapid, visual, over in seconds. Then we hand them Shakespeare and wonder why they switch off.
The gap isn't just academic. It's emotional.
Imagine stumbling over words in front of your peers, year after year. Shame becomes avoidance. Avoidance becomes defiance.
School leaders prioritising sustained reading with physical books report:
✅ Improved Progress 8 scores
✅ Reduced disruption
✅ Better post-16 progression
For students significantly behind, one-to-one intervention provides the privacy to rebuild both skills and confidence.
Reading shapes everything. When we improve literacy, we improve outcomes across every measure.
Addressing literacy isn't an add-on to school improvement—it's the foundation. 💡

This year, on Remembrance Day, I'm mindful of the power of stories and the significance of learning History in shaping our identities.
I absolutely remember my grandmother recounting her experiences working in a uniform factory, recalling the night that the factory across the street was bombed (they were lucky). My grandad shared his story of being captured in Normandy and becoming a German POW- how he hid a knife in his sock and how he and his battalion were lined up by the Nazi's on a train track hoping they didn't find the knife and all be killed. I heard these stories first hand, from people who were there. It's sad to think these personal accounts are fading as our WWII veterans pass on, highlighting the importance of teaching children to learn, remember, and reflect.
History is not merely about remembrance; it equips children with essential skills, including:
• Critical thinking and questioning evidence
• Analyzing cause and consequence
• Strong communication and argumentation skills
• Understanding context, perspective, and empathy
• Research and interpretation skills
• Making connections between past and present
These skills empower students across all subjects, from English and Politics to Science and Ethics.
Additionally, neurodiversity should not hinder the pursuit of knowledge. With appropriate support, every student, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences, can thrive in subjects that inspire them.
Pausing to remember and learn from those who came before us provides grounding and gratitude. Let’s keep their stories alive and encourage our young people to think critically, question, and strive for peace in this world.

I wish everyone was like Olie.
The reason we only take on 18% of tutors who apply to work with us is because, quite frankly, not everyone IS like Olie. It takes a special teacher to impress me, and every week in Olie’s class, he inspires me to remember the qualities an outstanding tutor must have to work with us.
Here are just some of his teaching qualities:
✅ Always friendly – greets with a smile and positive energy
🤝 Genuinely interested in how I’m doing
😊 Always positive – no matter what
👂 Listens carefully and attentively
😂 Loves to laugh – makes sessions enjoyable
🔄 Takes feedback and acts on it – always improving
🌟 Encouraging – lifts you up when you need it
🔍 Notices every tiny detail – nothing gets past him
📈 Pushes and challenges just enough – no unnecessary stress
👀 Spots when I’m slacking… even from across the room!
🧑🏫 Demos are crystal clear – easy to understand
📢 Instructions are always super clear
⏳ Perfect timing – never rushed, never dragging
📝 Impeccable planning – always prepared
🎭 Sessions are interesting, fun, and different every week
I'm making great progress and feel fitter than ever (even at 50! 💪).
✨ These are the qualities we look for in our tutors at Elite Tutors Sussex.

📱 Is TikTok Good for My Young Person? 🤔
As a parent, it’s tough to compete with the endless scroll of TikTok. 🎥 But teens are just as worried as we are about how much time they spend on their phones? 😟
Harvard researchers found that young people feel out of control when it comes to managing their screen time. The problem?
There are no natural boundaries—so it’s up to us to help! 🙋♀️
Here are some simple ways to support your teen:
✅ Set a study schedule together—structure makes all the difference.
📴 Encourage phone-free zones: Put devices in another room during study time or turn on flight mode.
🌙 Create a tech-free bedtime routine to support improved sleep.
👩🏫 Lead by example: Show them how you manage your own screen time.
One resource I highly recommend is Behind Their Screens 📚https://www.goodreads.com/.../59679077-behind-their-screens which is an incredible book by Harvard researchers Emily Weinstein and Carrie James, that dives into the struggles teens face and how we can support them.
Let’s help our young people thrive—online and off! 💪

🎃 Happy Halloween!
Let's talk scary teachers!
Do you remember that one teacher who gave you chills even on the sunniest day? The one who turned lessons into fearful experiences with impossible questions and icy glares?
🧙♀️ For me, it was Mrs. McGargle – my maths teacher. She made maths feel like an ordeal from which there was no escape! I can still remember the physical feeling of fear as I approached her with a question, or my book, for her to mark. 🦇 It took me another 10 years to love maths, not fear it!
My best friend even wrote 'McGargle is a witch' 🧙♀️ on her maths homework book-and then handed it in! She was in so much trouble and literally shaking with fear. We still talk about it now- almost 35 years later.
🎃 At Elite Tutors, we know how a daunting teacher can make a subject feel like a mountain too steep to climb, shadows cast over every lesson. But we’re here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way.
👻 Our tutors bring warmth, understanding, and encouragement into every session. They’re dedicated to making learning enjoyable and building students’ confidence so they feel empowered, not haunted, by their studies. 🕸️ Whether it’s English, maths, or science, we help students shed their fears and unlock their true potential in a warm, friendly and positive environment. 🎃
🍬With our 1:1 tutors, you can leave the scary stuff behind and give your child an uplifting, supportive learning experience entirely tailored to their needs.
