šŸ’¬ "I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 12 years old. I was losing lots of weight, became very skinny, and I seemed to constantly be thirsty and needing the loo.

"In hindsight, I didnā€™t really accept my diagnosis from the beginning and over the years my diabetes caused me to have an unhealthy relationship with food. I started university in September 2019, which seemed to be a trigger for me. I felt ugly, overweight and undesirable compared to the other girls, who I perceived to be better than me ā€“ both physically and intellectually.

"At this point I was undereating and taking laxatives to keep the weight off. It was in November 2020 that I received a diagnosis of diabulimia. I started to have therapy, which helped me begin to accept my diabetes and encouraged me to look after myself better.

"Understanding the realities of what I was doing to my health and seeing how much my family were worrying about me was the wakeup call I needed. I urge anyone struggling with diabulimia, or any eating disorder for that matter, to be brave and seek help. It will be worth it."

šŸ’™ Thank you so much Imogen for bravely sharing your experiences of and diabulimia for National Storytelling Week. We'll be sharing more throughout the week, so keep your eyes peeled!

ā“ Do you know the 4Ts of ? They are: Toilet (needing a wee more), Thirsty, Tired and Thinner.

Knowing the symptoms is so important to prevent Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), which happens when thereā€™s a severe lack of insulin in the body - so it can happen if type 1 diabetes isn't spotted early.

šŸ“¢ If youā€™re already familiar with the 4Ts, will you share this post to make sure more people know the signs of type 1 diabetes?
