Academic Support in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: why the question is not “human vs. AI"
A common debate in higher education today is whether artificial intelligence will replace traditional academic support.
This is the wrong question.
The real question is how AI can be integrated into academic support **without weakening student independence, academic integrity or critical judgement**.
Academic support has never been only about helping students complete tasks. At its best, it helps students develop the capabilities that higher education is meant to cultivate:
* research clarity
* methodological awareness
* critical reading
* structured argumentation
* ethical use of sources
* academic confidence
* independent learning
AI can support some of these processes. It can assist with planning, explanation, accessibility, language support, formative feedback and information organisation. But AI cannot replace the student’s responsibility to understand, verify, question and defend their own academic work.
This distinction is essential.
If AI is used only to accelerate production, it risks turning academic work into output generation.
If AI is used responsibly, it can become part of a wider learning-support ecosystem that strengthens student capability.
The future of academic support should therefore be neither anti-AI nor uncritically pro-AI.
It should be **human-centred, ethically governed and educationally purposeful**.
AI should support learning — not substitute for learning.
