I sat down with the Mid-life Men: the mental health podcast to talk about something most men don't see coming: losing themselves the moment the career ends.
For most of our lives we're known by what we do. Work gives us routine, status, a reason to get up. Take that away and a lot of men find there's less underneath than they thought, which is why "finally retired" so often turns into "who am I now?" We talk about why men tie their identity to work without ever realising it, and what's really behind the loneliness and drift that follows.
I also talk about the diagnosis that changed everything for me: I was told I had a terminal bone tumour. It turned out to be wrong, but it forced me to rethink what a meaningful life actually looks like, long before most people are asked to. And why curiosity, not comfort, is what carries you into a good second half.
If you're already retired, or watching it come, I'd ask: what would you lose that nobody warns you about?
