More information: If you refer to someone as a woman in English it does NOT suggest she is an OLD woman! Just that she is an adult and not a child. And of course you can say lady which is a bit more formal. I know a lot of pop music talks about women as girls but that started in the 1950s and 60s and very often those songs were talking about 16 and 17 year olds, literal girls. But the Beatles “she was just 17, you know what I mean” would (rightly) not be acceptable these days.
