Vanderbilt University just confirmed: standardized testing is coming back - but not for everyone just yet.
Hereâs the breakdown
Fall 2027 & Fall 2028 applicants - Still 100% test-
optional. SAT/ACT scores are NOT required.
Fall 2029 applicants - Test scores will be required. No
more choosing whether to submit.
The takeaway? Testing policies are shifting fast across top universities, and being proactive with your prep timeline (even if youâre âtest-optionalâ today) could make or break your application in a more competitive future cycle.
Not sure how this affects your application strategy or timeline? We help students build a competitive plan for exactly moments like this.

Another one 00 Georgia Tech just became the latest major university to drop its supplemental essay for the 2026-27 admission cycle (Fall 2027 applicants).
That means students applying to Georgia Tech will now
ONLY need to write the Common App personal essay - no more school-specific short answer.
Georgia Tech joins UGA, UNC Chapel Hill, and UVA in cutting supplemental essays this cycle. The trend is real, and itâs moving fast.
If youâre a student (or parent of one) trying to keep up with which schools are changing their essay requirements this year, this is exactly the kind of thing that can make or break your application strategy.

Columbia just made a huge move for future policy majors đ
Columbia Universityâs School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) - one of the top graduate schools in the world for international relations and public policy - just launched its first-ever undergraduate major: Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP).
Hereâs what to know:
đ Available to Columbia College & Columbia General Studies students once admitted
đ
Foundation courses begin Fall 2026, with major declaration by lottery Dec 2026 - March 2027
đ Electives include Geopolitics & Diplomacy, Data Science for Policy, Governance & Development, and more
Important: this isnât a separate application - you apply to Columbia College or General Studies like normal, then have the option to declare GAPP once youâre enrolled.
But that doesnât mean itâs not useful right now. If youâre interested in international relations, government, or public policy, this is exactly the kind of specific, timely detail that makes a âWhy Columbiaâ or âWhy this majorâ essay stand out from generic answers everyone else is writing.
