Yale has quietly ended likely letters for academic applicants, starting this admissions cycle. The change hasn’t been publicly announced, but the admissions office confirmed it to the Yale Daily News.
Likely letters for recruited athletes will continue.

Why? Yale’s director of recruitment said an internal analysis couldn’t find evidence that the letters raised yield among the students who got them. Those students enrolled at a lower rate than regular decision admits overall, and the program took a lot of staff time. For context, Yale has traditionally sent around 200 of these letters a year, and 1,652 of the 2,328 students admitted to the class of 2030 enrolled (70.9 percent)

Many elite universities still use likely letters, so don’t assume every school is moving in the same direction. Your timeline, your expectations, and how you compare offers in the spring all depend on knowing how each school actually operates.

Columbia University just expanded its undergraduate Class of 2030 by about 180 students (not the 125 it originally promised) 📈

This comes after Columbia’s plan to grow enrollment at Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), originally announced as a phased increase of 125, 200, and 250 students over three admissions cycles. Instead, the first jump came in bigger than expected.
