Many parents don’t realize that honey is unsafe for babies under 12 months.
Even a small taste can lead to infant botulism.
Let’s help spread the word — honey is healthy, but only after baby’s first birthday! 🎂🍯
Honey is not recommended for babies under 1 year old because it can contain spores of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum.
Here’s why that matters:
🦠 Botulinum spores are harmless to older children and adults because their digestive systems are mature enough to prevent the spores from growing.
👶 Infants under 12 months have immature gut flora (the balance of bacteria in their intestines), which means the spores can germinate and produce botulinum toxin inside their intestines.
☠️ This toxin causes infant botulism, a rare but serious illness that can lead to:
⚠️ Early symptoms
• Constipation (often the first sign) — baby may go several days without a bowel movement
• Poor feeding or sucking — baby may have trouble breastfeeding or taking a bottle
• Weak cry — softer or weaker than usual
• Lethargy — baby seems unusually tired, floppy, or less responsive
🚨 Progressive symptoms
If the toxin spreads, it can cause muscle weakness throughout the body:
• “Floppy baby” appearance — weak head control, limp arms and legs
• Drooling — due to weak facial muscles and difficulty swallowing
• Breathing problems — shallow or slow breathing, which can be life-threatening
• Loss of facial expression — baby may appear expressionless or have droopy eyelids
Even pasteurized honey can still contain spores, since pasteurization doesn’t destroy them.
🏥 What to do
If you notice constipation plus any muscle weakness, feeding difficulty, or breathing issues, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Doctors can confirm botulism with lab tests and treat it with a special medication called Botulism Immune Globulin (BabyBIG®), which neutralizes the toxin.
👉 In short:
Honey is safe for adults and older kids, but no honey (raw, processed, or baked into foods) should be given to babies under 12 months old. Hamilton Doula
