Are instructions really the enemy of thinking for yourself?

There's a school of thought that says following instructions limits children's creativity and independent thinking.

I don't agree.

At Beyond Blocks, we use instructions every lesson to get children to the start line.

This week's frog lesson is one of my favourite examples.

Every child starts by building the same tadpole from instructions. In doing that, they're learning useful building techniques and, importantly, everyone arrives at the challenge with the same basic model.

Then the instructions stop.

We talk about metamorphosis. A tadpole grows back legs, then front legs, and gradually loses its tail as it becomes a frog.

Those facts give us our constraints. The model they've built gives us our starting point.

Now we can set a clearly defined problem:
Make your tadpole become a frog.

How will it grow legs? How will its arms appear? How will its tail disappear?

That's entirely up to them and that's when the independent problem solving begins.

Across an entire class, the children all start in exactly the same place and are given exactly the same problem... but the solutions are always different.

The frog in this video was made by one of our Parent & Child pairs this week. It's their solution.

Around the room, other children were solving exactly the same problem in completely different ways.

That's why I don't see instructions and independent thinking as opposites. For us, instructions are not the answer - they are the question.

We then add constraints by framing the problem and set the children off and let them solve it however they will.

We may start with instructions, but you will never see the same models by the end.

We were back at Alban City school in Hertfordshire again last week, for the 4th year running, teaching as part of their Digital Innovation Week.

The children learned not only how to build a robot to make their lives easier, but we had vigorous discussions about the impact that robots would have on the future of work. Would robots make everything better? Or would some things change for the worse?

By getting hands on and understanding the technology behind the headlines, the children had an unforgettable experience and I got home to some really nice feedback.

Is your school looking to bring computing to life? Let us bring in our LEGO kits and inspire your students through our hands on sessions.

Message us today and let's talk!

Last week we returned to Alban City School in Hertfordshire this week to run a few lessons as part of their Digital Innovation Week.

The children built robots that made some jobs really easy, but in doing so we ended up discussing what impact this would have on the human labour market.

Our robotics lessons don't just cover how to make robots, but we also encourage children to delve a lot deeper and ask why and what impact creating robots has on our lives.

If your school is looking to bring computing to life, why not give us a call. We bring in all the kit and teach from years of experience and will give your students a hands on experience they won't forget.

What a great first night at the newly formed Surbiton London AFOLs group!

I've been a member of the London Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) for years. They are a group that meet up once a month in a pub in Euston and build LEGO together and it's a great place to meet and chat with other people who enjoy a bit of Danish brick.

The only problem was that Euston is a bit of a faff to get to from Surbiton.

So for a few years I've wanted to bring the experience closer to home and tonight I finally made it happen with a bit of help from some friends Vicki and Geoff.

We had our first meetup tonight in the Berrylands pub, with loads of LEGO, some drinks and a small number of really lovely people and it was a blast!

We're hoping to make this a monthly event, so if you are an adult who loves playing with Lego and you're up for meeting people like you, let me know in the comments below!

Putting unwanted LEGO back to work!

Last week, I dropped off a big box of LEGO at Our Lady Immaculate School in Tolworth, where the Head, Mr Martin, was very happy to put it to use in the school.

We've accumulated rather a lot of LEGO over the years at Beyond Blocks, and rather than have it sitting around gathering dust, we'd much rather see it being used.

Beyond Blocks works with schools using LEGO to build robots, while teaching computing and engineering to get children building, programming and solving problems, and we're always keen to inspire new young minds.

We would love to get to know more schools in the local area, and we still have quite a lot more LEGO to give away.

So, if you know a local school that could make good use of some LEGO and that might be interested in hearing about what we do, please share this post with them or tag a teacher below, and we'll do our best to sort them out!

The sun was out and it was a lovely day for this year's Surbiton Festival.

As usual we joined some other local small business friends on the Surbiton Business Community stand with a few LEGO robots for the afternoon.

It was lovely to see so many people out and there was a lovely buzz around the stand. It was lovely to see so many of our students and lots of new faces too.

Thanks to everyone who dropped by and a big shout out to the SBC for organising, and to my fellow business owners on the stand today Dotwise, Mindbending Wellness, Reorderly London, Storm Cooking

We came into class today and discovered one of the Spike Prime hubs had a mysterious unknown program on it.

What could it possibly be?

We had no idea what it was, so hit play to find out

Another day, another donation!

We’ve just donated some K’NEX to St Alban’s Primary, one of the schools we work closely with. They already use K’NEX to build some brilliant models, so we know it’ll be put to very good use!

We’ve got quite a lot of LEGO in storage at the moment that we don't use and rather than have it sitting in boxes, we’d love to get it into the hands of children who can build, create and learn with it.

So, if you know a local school that could make good use of some LEGO, please share this post with them and ask them to get in touch. We can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone, but we’ll do our best to get it somewhere it can make a difference. ❤️

It was a huge honour to be invited to deliver the graduation speech today at my alma mater, the University of Roehampton for the School of Education graduation, where I spoke about how important it is to reflect on what makes you unique in order to find how you can make your mark in the world.

It was such a special experience to be back and to give back to a university that has a very special place in my heart.

Congratulations to all of today's graduates and I can't wait to see what you build!

Building robots from LEGO isn't just child's play.

Our sessions are all about building up the ability to solve problems, overcome challenges, working in teams and communicating ideas.

And that's what makes them perfect for adult team building too.

We recently ran an INSET day at a school, using LEGO to facilitate discussion about teaching and then topped off the day with a fantastic team building exercise bringing the team together through play.

With years of experience in education combined with our unique approach to team building isn't it time your school brought us in?

If you want your INSET day done differently, get in touch with us today!
