Important Facts You Should Know About The MRCEM OSCE Exam
-The MRCEM OSCE is the third exam required for Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and assesses the clinical and communication skills of trainees and ensures that they are those of someone ready for higher training.
-The MRCEM OSCE consists of an Objective Structure Clinical Examination of 18 seven-minute stations. An additional one minute of reading time is provided for candidates between each OSCE station.
-The MRCEM OSCE is assessed using domain-based marking. The cut score for this exam is determined using the borderline regression method, and a +1 standard error measurement is added to create the pass mark.

The MRCEM Intermediate Examination is mapped to the Specialty Learning Outcomes (SLO) of Year 1-3 of the 2021 Emergency Medicine Curriculum. All applicants for the MRCEM Intermediate examination are strongly advised to familiarise themselves with the 2021 curriculum, paying particular attention to the key capabilities and descriptors for each SLO assessed in this examination.
The basic blueprint is as follows:
-SLO 1 Complex Stable Patient – 55 questions
-SLO3 Resuscitate – 40 questions
-SLO4 Injured Patient – 30 questions
-SLO5 Paediatric Emergency Medicine – 25 questions
-SLO6 Procedural Skills – 20 questions
-SLO7 Complex or Challenging Situations – 10 questions

Am I eligible to apply for the MRCEM primary?
Here is the answer:
- No previous experience in emergency medicine is required for the MRCEM Primary Exam.
- A candidate will be eligible to enter the MRCEM Primary Examination provided they hold a medical qualification approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) for the purposes of registration.
- The examination is conducted in English, and candidates are advised that IELTS Level 7 is the expected standard for completion of the MRCEM and FRCEM examinations.
