One of my favourite things about Maths? It can settle arguments.

It’s so clear and decisive that there is often no doubt in what a correct answer is - no shades of grey, no ‘open to interpretation’.

If you want your Maths GCSE guidance straight from the source, you have to go to the Chief Examiners Report. Each exam board publishes them and they are such a worthwhile trove of useful tips.

This is a biggie for me:

STAY IN THE REAL WORLD. If the answer doesn’t sound like it wouldn’t reasonably happen in the real world, then you’ve probably got it wrong. Do you really think the local bake sale sold over a million cakes? No? Then the answer must be wrong. Or that’s a crazy bake sale.

One thing that always really stuns me as a GCSE Maths tutor is how few people are aware of the Chief Examiner’s reports, and what a great resource it is. This is the ‘inside line’ on how to get easy marks, and a direct guide on what the examiners are looking for.

In this instance, the tip is CLARITY. It is so easy to lose marks just by not writing clearly on the page, or even not writing the answer in the given answer box - I’ve seen it happen myself. And this is a really simple habit to get into now to ensure that all your hard work gets the marks it deserves.

If you have just started back to Year 11, or have a child who has done - this is key knowledge for your Maths GCSE.

Trigonometry is the science of triangles, and within that for GCSE, we need to learn Pythoagoras' theorem, non-right angled triangle rules and, of course: SOHCAHTOA.

Today, we are doing a Maths past paper that looks at SOHCAHTOA, and how that breaks down.

To look at this in more detail, I have a few spaces available on my 1-1s and group sessions (link in bio).

My three tips for you if you are facing GCSE Maths resits.

I know it probably feels easy to say ‘put a positive spin on it’ but the ONLY way I have found a path through when things haven’t gone my way in the past is to think of it as having a ‘second opportunity’ to try.

How do I make sure my students have the best possible chance of improving their outcomes at the Maths GCSE?

Well, one of my secrets is that I read the Chief Examiners Report for each of the boards I work with (Edexcel, AQA and the iGCSE).

It’s a great way to get insight into where easy marks are being lost.

There’s so much to think about at the start of term - don’t let the Maths GCSE be another thing to add to that sense of overwhelm!

My small group classes are structured, expert-led and above all: fun. We are taking the stress out of the subject, by going through key concepts in a no-nonsense, patient way and looking at past paper questions to see how they work in practise.

I can’t believe I have made it 32 days of explaining different Maths words!

Today we are at FORMULA, which is one of my favourite words - more fixed that an equation and therefore living more firmly in the real world.
