Maths with Mills
A structured online programme that supports students, in small group sessions, for their Maths GCSE exams. Expert-led, empathetic and focussed on exam success.
Maths is full of complicated-sounded words that we don’t spend enough time in school examining.
Thankfully, Maths with Mills is here to explain each and every one of them!
Today: theorem.
What other words are your kids struggling with in school? Let me know what you’d like me to cover next in the comments.
This is exactly the type of word that simply DOES NOT get explained in schools - I think because it's so commonplace for adults, we don't really consider that KS4 age children wouldn't necessarily know it.
It comes up quite a lot on Maths GCSE past papers however, as it's quite a good tool for examiners to really test students working at the higher end of the grade system.
This is the sort of simplifying I spend time doing with my students - so if you are keen to find Maths tuition for your medium-sized humans, look no further (than my bio).
And what other words are you/your kids coming up against in your Maths GCSE that you'd like 'translating'?

What is one thing that gets really overlooked in schools Maths lessons?
For me, the answer is the MEANINGS of the words being used. We have this out-dated idea that English is about WORDS and Maths is about NUMBERS, and there’s no cross over. But actually, if you really get under the skin of Maths vocabulary, you will be empowered so much more in your Maths learning.
As a GCSE tutor who covers both Maths AND English, of course I thought it would be a good idea to try and explain One Maths Word every day! I think this undertaking is really important though as this is very much filling in a gap that isn’t covered in day to day curricula in schools.
Today’s word is: OPERATION. Follow me for more words every day - and let’s see when I run out! 😂. Will that ever even happen?
What words do your kids get stuck on in schools? Leave a comment below and I will cover it in one of my videos.
Have you heard of Summer Learning Loss?
With our Maths in particular, we can lose as much as 42% on test scores after the Summer break!
Keeping up Maths as a skill can be something that we look at little and often - and I am running short sessions on-line over Summer for Maths GCSE students. This is a chance for students entering Years 10 and 11 to ‘top up’ their Maths retention and go into the new term in September feeling confident and empowered.
The study I reference in this video is here: https://internationalschools.britishcouncil.org/blog/summer-slide-how-educators-can-approach-seasonal-learning-loss
Did you know that the World Cup can teach us something really cool about powers and sequences in Maths? Who’d have thought that in amongst the beautiful game is a lesson that will really help when it comes to your GCSE Maths exam lol face
I love that Maths is everywhere you look - even in the most unexpected of places - and this has cheered me right up after the very sad events of Wednesday evening.
And have you figured out the answer to the question at the end? If so put your solutions in the comments below. And follow me for more Maths hacks.

Get a head start on the Maths GCSE this Summer - on-line across the School holidays. Various dates to choose from, including one-offs or more intensive courses.
This is about building confidence, staying on the ball over the Summer months and going into the next school year feeling grounded and calm. LET'S GO.
the one thing I have learnt in my 20+ years as a tutor, is all the different tricks examiners use to ‘trip up’ students. In my structured classes I teach students how to look out for these, as well as demystifying the language of Maths. Students leave feeling equipped and enabled for the tougher parts of the Maths exams.
In 2026 I am running Summer revision sessions - for info follow the link in my bio or DM me. All sessions are designed to ground students calmly in the syllabus so they are confident and ready to hit the ground running when term starts in September 2026.
