This week is Loneliness Awareness week, where we give loneliness a voice.

We currently face a ‘Loneliness Epidemic’ where there is a lack of third spaces, youth clubs, groups, and limited services which people can turn too. This is a global epidemic of people struggling to find a supportive community in which they can speak to others, and open up about their struggles.

An article published in December 2025, shows the depth of youth loneliness in the UK, where many young people are struggling with emotional, social and existential loneliness.

- 33% of Britons aged 16 to 29 reported feeling lonely “often, always or some of the time”
- ‘The average British 18-to-24-year-old spends six hours and 20 minutes online every day, according to the media regulator Ofcom, higher than other adult age groups’
- ‘Local authority spending on youth services in England fell by 73% between 2010/11 and 2023/24, according to the charity YMCA’
- ‘More than one million people (of all ages) were referred to NHS social prescribing services in 2023, a recent study found’

These statistics present a growing issue within the UK and globally where we should be creating more social spaces for people to socially engage with each other, allowing them to build connection.

May is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Awareness Month which is dedicated to reducing stigma and educating the public of what BPD is, how it can affect individuals and how treatment looks like.

It is a complex mental illness characterised by intense emotional instability, a distorted self-image, and intense fears of abandonment, which heavily impacts relationships and daily functioning.

BPD is highly stigmatised, often leaving patients feeling hopeless.
Campaigns and awareness months are vital for combating this. They educate communities, advocate for empathetic clinical care, and highlight effective therapy which can help make managing symptoms and recovery easier.

11th May - 17th May is Mental Health Awareness Week.

The growing demand for mental health services in the UK has reached its maximum. We have too many people who are left to deal with their mental health struggles by themselves, due to limited support from hospitals, medical professionals and charities.

Despite, medical and technological advancements, the growing barriers of accessing mental health services which is suitable for people, and their condition, is difficult.

We still have a long way to go, where we can ensure that every individual has their needs met and is treated with compassion when struggling.

Many more medical and psychological research needs to be taken, so we can be more inclusive of lesser known conditions, and create safe spaces where people can voice their issues without stigmatisation.
