’s ‘What I Wish I Knew’ Welcome Event

It was so nice meeting all of you at the Welcome Fair, and now it’s time for us to formally introduce ourselves. Join us at our welcome event, where we’ll introduce our upcoming events and share our advice on how to navigate medical school!

We are pleased to have Mr Akshay Patel, consultant thoracic surgeon, who will give a talk about his journey in medicine and the lessons he has learnt along the way. Our committee members will also share their insights into study methods, including notes and resources they have found useful.

There will be a suturing competition, as well as a networking session where you will have the opportunity to speak with Mr Akshay Patel, our committee members, and fellow students.

We’re excited to welcome Ms Sara Volpi, Cardiothoracic Surgery Registrar at Guy’s and St Thomas’, who will be sharing her journey into surgical training, along with insights into building a competitive portfolio and succeeding in applications.

There will also be a Q&A session, with the opportunity to ask questions on careers, training pathways, and OSCEs!

Ready to build your surgical skills? Join us for a hands-on suturing workshop with Ms Nair, a Surgical Care Practitioner at GSTT, where you’ll practise core techniques using suturing kits, learn about different materials, and build confidence in a small-group, supportive setting.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, this is a great opportunity to gain practical experience.

We’re excited to bring you a dedicated cardiothoracic evening combining hands-on surgical skills with insight into training, portfolios, and OSCEs — designed to support you at every stage of medical school.

🪡 Suturing Skills Workshop with Ms Nair (15:00–17:00)
Get hands-on experience practising core suturing techniques using training kits, learn about different materials, and build confidence in a small-group, supportive setting.

🫀 Portfolio & OSCE Q&A with Ms Sara Volpi (18:00–20:00)
