Student-led outreach scheme to encourage women and non-binary students to pursue a PhD in mathematics.
Operating as usual
Meet the committee 👋
Hey! My name is Kareena (she/her). I am a 2nd year Maths and Physics Msci student with an interest in fluid mechanics and quantum physics.
I learnt about the Piscopia Initiative through an email sent by the Maths Department.
It can be tough to pursue a PhD in mathematics. Therefore, as a member of the committee my goal is to empower more female and non-binary students to follow their dream in this field.
Feel free to ask me any questions, I'm happy to help!☺️

Are all your friends starting to think about jobs? Do your parents keep asking you what you’re going to do with your life? Have you been enjoying your studies so far and want to continue doing maths? Do you know how to effectively study remotely?
We’ve been in that situation and we’re here to help!
Join us for our first event, grab your lunch and come join our Zoom session on Tuesday 15 December 11:00-12:00 (GMT)!
We also want to give you a casual opportunity to gather information about the pros and cons of doing a PhD vs. going straight into a career or grad scheme. There will also be plenty of time for you to ask questions and speak with female PhD students about their experiences as women in mathematical research. We will also be talking about how to write your dissertation and the best resources to help you manage your project!
Our event is aimed at female/non-binary undergraduate or MSc students who are interested in mathematics or related disciplines, such as Computer Science or Physics.
After signing up you will receive a Zoom link to join us on the day of the event.

How to Write Your Dissertation & PhD Information Event Virtual information event hosted by UCL Piscopia Initiative, featuring dissertation tips and PhD insight.
Meet the committee! 👋
Hi! I'm Adam (they/them), and I'm a second year on the Mathematics and Physics MSci. I learned about the Piscopia Initiative after I got an email from the Maths department about PiFORUM, their online conference. After an incredibly interesting and enjoyable week, I was very happy to join the UCL node.
My goal as a committee member is, of course, to encourage more women and non-binary people to consider and pursue PhDs in Maths and adjacent subjects, as well as create more representation for non-binary people within Maths - I myself don't know any other non-binary people in Maths, let alone at UCL.
I'm always happy to chat, so if you have any questions or just want to task, just drop a message ^^
Just a reminder to grab your tickets for our first event!
It will be from 12-1pm GMT on Wednesday 28th October.
We look forward to seeing you there! 😁

Meet the committee 👋🏻
Hi everyone! My name is Ilina (she/her), and I’m currently in my third year on the BSc Statistics Programme.
I learned about the Piscopia Initiative through an email sent by the Head of the Statistical Science Department. I was interested in and applied for their PiFORUM Conference. I attended it at the beginning of September, and I am delighted that I had this opportunity.
By being part of this Society, I hope that I can encourage more female and non-binary students to pursue a PhD in mathematics and its related disciplines by raising awareness for the PhD option, supporting networking and highlighting role models.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
I hope to see you at our upcoming events. ☺️
Join Piscopia Initiative for our first PiWORKS seminar of the year on Tuesday October 27, 13:00-14:00, by Professor Maggie Chen from Cardiff University.
This new monthly seminar series is hosted by the Piscopia Initiative (piscopia.co.uk) and features women and non-binary researchers from UK universities working in diverse areas of mathematics.
Prof. Chen’s talk will be jointly hosted with Cardiff’s Women in Mathematics Society and chaired by their lead PhD student Tasarla Deadman, who has also founded the Cardiff node of the Piscopia Society.
The target audience of the talks are final year undergraduate and MSc mathematics students, but PhD students, academic staff or students from related disciplines are very welcome to attend and encouraged to participate. We emphasise that this will be an excellent opportunity to build an UK-wide community of women and non-binary people in mathematics; after the seminar, we will create break-out rooms to allow for informal networking.

Date: Tuesday 27th October, 13:00-14:00
Location: Zoom
Speaker: Professor Maggie Chen, Cardiff University.
Abstract: I am, by training, a financial economist specialized in quantitative methods. I am interested in theory-underpinned finance research that focuses on real problems from the financial market and industry. Currently, I have established research groups to comprehensively study Hawkes processes and aim to apply them to various real problems, especially in new problems related to FinTech. My ultimate goal is to establish robust modeling frameworks that are directly applicable by practitioners and regulators.
Interested in giving a talk? We’d love to hear from you! Just get in touch at: [email protected] or [email protected].

Meet the committee 👋🏻
Hi everyone! My name is Chantelle (she/her) and I’m a third year Statistics BSc student. I have always felt passionate about encouraging more female/non-binary students to enter STEM career paths and never thought about pursuing a PhD until last year. I learned about the Piscopia Initiative though PiForum, their online conference, and have now started to apply for Medical Statistics PhDs.
By being a committee member, I hope that I can encourage and inspire more female/non-binary students to pursue a PhD in mathematics and its related disciplines.
Feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions or want to become a member of our society. ☺️
