Jason Arday’s story is one of extraordinary resilience.
Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and global developmental delay at around age three, Jason did not speak until he was about 11 and did not learn to read and write until around the age of 18.
Yet, against the odds, he went on to build an academic career and became Cambridge University’s youngest Black professor.
His remarkable journey was later overshadowed by allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding his academic work. He resigned from Cambridge amid the controversy.
Days later, Jason Arday was found dead unexpectedly, aged 41. His death was reported as unexpected but not suspicious. While the timing has understandably raised questions, it has not been established that his death was caused by the plagiarism allegations.
His life raises difficult questions about resilience, academic integrity, neurodiversity, public scrutiny and the immense pressure placed on people in the public eye.
A remarkable journey that ended in a deeply tragic and unexpected way. 🕊️

10 Facts Everyone Should Know About Autistic People 🌟
1. Autism is a natural variation of the human brain — not something to be “fixed.”
2. Autistic people experience the world differently, and that difference should be respected.
3. Many autistic people have unique strengths, such as creativity, attention to detail, and honesty.
4. Communication may look different — some people use speech, others use AAC, typing, or gestures. All are valid.
5. Autism is lifelong — autistic children grow up to be autistic adults.
6. Sensory differences are common. What feels normal to you may be overwhelming or soothing for an autistic person.
7. Social interaction styles vary. Autistic people may connect differently, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want friendship or love.
8. Routine and predictability can bring comfort and stability. Changes may feel very stressful.
9. Autistic people can also have co-occurring conditions (like ADHD, anxiety, or epilepsy), but those are not “autism itself.”
10. Autism is part of identity — many autistic people are proud of who they are. Acceptance matters more than awareness.

Many autistic people, self-advocates, families, educators, and disability advocates would agree with Gov. JB Pritzker’s message that autism is not a tragedy and that autistic individuals bring unique strengths, perspectives, and contributions to their communities. At the same time, some parents and caregivers especially those supporting autistic individuals with high support needs, intellectual disabilities, safety concerns, or who are non-speaking may feel that statements like this don’t fully. 🙌👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 capture the daily challenges their families face.
