Ref:The Zambe Secondary School Cricket Journey*

*Humble Beginnings: July 2023*
Cricket came to Zambe Secondary School in late July 2025 through the _Cricket Kumasha_ programme, an initiative by Zimbabwe Cricket to grow the game in rural schools. The response was incredible. 47 young players — 21 girls and 26 boys — turned up for the very first session, eager to learn a sport many had never played before.

Resources were scarce. We had few bats, balls, and pads, and no proper pitch. But that didn’t stop us. Coaches and teachers improvised with what we had, using tennis balls, handmade wickets, and sheer passion. Training sessions became about more than cricket — they taught discipline, teamwork, and belief.

*Building Experience: Friendly Matches*
To give the kids game time, we organized friendlies with local schools: Haparari Primary, Zambe Primary School, and St Killian High School. These matches were the first taste of competition for most players. Win or lose, every game built confidence and exposed our kids to real match situations.

*Breakthrough Year: 2026 Season*
Fast forward to 2026 and the hard work paid off. Zambe entered the _Mutasa Under-19 Games_ that took place at St Mathias .and we played against Bonda high school, TSVINGWE high school,St Augustine,St Mathias and Zambe secondary and dominated — winning all our matches. That victory took us to the District Games, where the competition got tougher.

At Districts, we faced teams from across the region: Chipinge, Makoni, Buhera, Mutare, Chimanimani, and fellow Mutasa schools. Zambe Secondary stood tall and won every game, becoming _Mutasa District Champions_.

*Provincial & National Recognition*
Our success didn’t go unnoticed. Six of our players were selected to represent Manicaland Province:
1. *Delight Pasimupindu*
2. *Winnie Nemaisa*
3. *Vertinate Masvikeni*
4. *Oleen Mutenga*
5. *Shalom Katsatse*
6. *Anotidaishe Munengwa*

Even bigger milestones followed: *Winnie Nemaisa* and *Delight Pasimupindu* have gone on to represent *Zimbabwe Under-19*. On the boys’ side, *Fenmore Tenga* and *Petros Christian Nemaisa* are now set to play in the *National Premier League* under Westside Cricket Club.

From starting with limited gear in July 2025to producing national players in 2026— Zambe’s rise shows what passion and opportunity can do.

What's next*

We’re now looking to grow further: more equipment, a proper practice pitch, and more game time. The dream is to see more Zambe players wear Zimbabwe colours.

Tribute to Father John Vernon Neville, O.Carm. (Fr Joe Vernon) on the Centenary Celebrations of St Killian's Mission
As we celebrate 100 years of St Killian's Mission, we pause to remember and honor one of the great figures who helped shape its history and legacy—Father John Vernon Neville, O.Carm., affectionately known as Fr Joe Vernon.
An Irish Carmelite missionary, Fr Joe devoted much of his life to the people of Zimbabwe and to the growth of St Killian's Mission. Serving as Principal from 1966 to 2000, he guided the institution for more than three decades with vision, dedication, and unwavering faith. Under his leadership, St Killian's became a beacon of educational excellence, spiritual formation, and community service.
Fr Joe was much more than an administrator. He was a pastor, mentor, educator, and community leader. He embraced the people he served, learned to speak Shona, and immersed himself in the culture and daily life of the community. Through this, he built lasting bonds of trust, respect, and affection that continue to be remembered today.
As St Killian's marks its centenary, we recognize that its story is also the story of faithful servants like Fr Joe Vernon, whose commitment helped build the strong foundations upon which the institution stands. Generations of students passed through his care and guidance, carrying with them the values of discipline, integrity, faith, and service that he tirelessly promoted.
His life reminds us that the greatness of St Killian's is not measured only by its buildings or achievements, but by the men and women who dedicated themselves to the mission of educating minds, nurturing character, and serving God and humanity.
As we celebrate 100 years of St Killian's Mission, we give thanks for the extraordinary contribution of Fr Joe Vernon and all the Carmelites who helped shape this beloved institution. Their sacrifices, vision, and faith continue to inspire us as we look to the future.
May the next century of St Killian's be guided by the same spirit of excellence, compassion, and service that Fr Joe embodied throughout his life.
Fr Joe Vernon's legacy lives on in every classroom, every chapel, every community, and every life touched by St Killian's Mission.
