We are pleased to share Professor Nora Colton’s analysis of the Government's new 10-Year Capital Plan for the NHS in Healthcare Leader News.

Professor Colton argues:

🏠 NHS trusts will lease unused land to developers, so that nurses, porters and other staff can afford to live close to where they work.

💡 Prioritising staff housing will only work when matched by investment in the workforce and leadership capacity needed to use it.

🏥 As Professor Colton writes: "The future of the NHS will depend not simply on the buildings it constructs, but on whether it creates the conditions in which people choose to build their careers”.

It’s Student of the Week time! 🎉

Meet Olivia Burns, an MBA Health Student whose sharing what's next after her studies at the UCL Global Business School for Health come to an end.

For Olivia, healthcare innovation is personal. Born with a a rare congenital heart condition, she joined the UCL MBA Health with lived experience and a desire to gain the perspective needed to lead and create change.

Speaking about the value of this programme for healthcare leaders and professionals, she shared:

💬 "Leadership is about knowing what's coming up on the horizon, how to plan for it strategically, and how you're going to lead an organisation into this new way of doing health."

She now works at Health Innovation Yorkshire and Humber, where she supports other innovators as they navigate the healthcare system.

We are pleased to share Professor Meike Schleiff featured on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour yesterday.

Joining Anita Rani, Professor Meike spoke alongside Brianna Holt, discussing why growing numbers of women (particularly Black American women) are travelling to South Korea for essential healthcare, from cardiovascular and gynaecological investigations to extensive diagnostic screening.

The main takeaways?

→ Women are buying is concentrated attention, not just cheaper care
→ Being heard is not kindness in healthcare. It is part of clinical quality
→ Medical tourism is evidence of a health systems gap, not a true solution to it.

It’s Student of the Week time! 🎉

Meet Dann Lacea, a first-year Business and Health BSc/MSci student who was recently nominated for the TargetJobsUK's Undergraduate of the Year Award.

Making the most of his first year, Dann has also undertaken a number of internships including at Howden, as well as a student research in renewable energy this Spring.

With JCQ Results Day this week, Dann shared some advice for our incoming Undergraduates:

💬 "My primary advice for anyone considering or starting at UCL GBSH is to cultivate a growth mindset and remain open to new concepts, even if they seem unrelated to your studies initially.

Because UCL GBSH is highly interdisciplinary, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring modules in sustainability alongside my interests in finance and healthcare.

By absorbing diverse ideas rather than narrowing your focus, you learn to view complex systems holistically. This perspective is essential when analysing health systems that impact entire populations, as it allows you to map the broader landscape and identify key hidden players."
