Diwrnod Shwmae Suβmae at Nursery π
Diwrnod Shwmae Suβmae is a Welsh celebration that takes place every year on 15 October. It encourages everyone to speak Welsh and use the language in everyday life.
At nursery, we donβt just celebrate the Welsh language on this special day; we encourage the children to use and enjoy Welsh every day as part of our daily routine.
We use simple Welsh phrases throughout the day to help the children understand our routine, recognise what is happening next and become familiar with the language in a fun and natural way.
We use these phrases alongside English to support the childrenβs understanding and confidence.
Some of the Welsh phrases we use include:
π Golchi ein dwylo β Washing our hands
π Mynd iβr tΕ· bach β Going to the toilet
π Amser cylch β Circle time
π Amser tacluso β Tidy-up time
π Amser cinio β Lunchtime
π Chwarae yn yr awyr agored β Outdoor play
We also incorporate Welsh into our everyday interactions by using praise, greeting one another, asking how we are feeling and encouraging the children to communicate with their friends and practitioners.
By hearing and using Welsh regularly, the children have opportunities to develop their language skills, build confidence and develop an appreciation of Welsh culture and heritage from an early age.
Shwmae Suβmae! Letβs celebrate our Welsh language not just today, but every day! π΄σ §σ ’σ ·σ ¬σ ³σ Ώ
